Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey i am just curious to know how people would view a dominated winterguard army. Since I really like Khador and not in the mood to field a bunch of uhlans and such. I felt like maybe plottin a army dedicated to the winterguard with their field guns, blunderbusses, and rocketeers. Obviously i plan to have Grigorovich as part of this force but what would be some recommendations. Widowmakers are a obvious choice since they would be good long range units. But i am more curious on what warjacks to invest in and a caster....
Well, one thing about WM/H, armies are very small. So it's hard to set a 'theme.' I mean, essentially
Unit Winterguard + UA & Standard
That is an entire army! So, is using winterguard as your troops viable? Sure, with the UA and Kovnik Joe, they're a perfectly good unit. But can you see how it's tough to, say, express one's opinion about a 'WG themed army'?
Army Points: 500
Victory Points: 20
Name Cost VP
Kommander Sorscha Kratikoff
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Winterguard ( 8/10 )
Winterguard Officer and Standard Bearer

oi thats kind of a let down cause i wanted to have themed army...but that seems kinda difficult...oi
well i am experimenting with army lists at the moments and would like some opinions. the lists will lack the theme though...
Sorry, didn't mean to discourage you. WM/H just tends to be all about the Warcaster/Warlock. It's not an 'army size' game, so you can't really create the feel of like, a Winter Guard battalion. Two squads is pretty much all that fits in your points It's more about the Warcaster and her personal escort.
i have heard that warmachine is becoming alot larger in scale as the months go by...
So what do you recommend for Khador. I definitley want to field a number of uhlans cause of their charging potential and i have heard that pikemen are good for khador beginning along with sorscha as a warcaster...
Uh don't let Inquisitor discourage you, it's easy to make and stick with a theme. Winterguard theme even has it's own seperate list, that when you use Winterguard you get BONUSES for doing so. It's great.
Size isn't comparable as well, as the game can scale all the way to 2,000 pts. which is A LOT of models on the table. I've seen a few 1k games and they are glorious. Team games as well can help expand the scope.
So Winterguard, let's see what units have that actual title and fit the list in that Theme, using the 701st Iron Rain(The WG list) as a basis:
Rocketeer (Always fun, and come MkII, you can take 3 of them per squad of WG).
Officer & Standard Bearer (Only one per army, but it's not something that will limit you ever.)
Winterguard Field Gun Crew (Not as good as the next entry, but with the rules allowed in this list it's a monster)
Winterguard Mortar Crew (Never has an artillery piece been cried broken as much as this cheap, awesome piece of weaponry. This is what every artillery piece is measured to, and literally nothing can better it.)
Solo wise you can get Grigorovich (Which is a given), and the Koldun Lord which is great and has excellent 'Jack Marshal abilities.
Fluff wise Sorscha and Irusk are the two that make heavy use of the Winterguard, and alongside them you can use: The Butcher (He's fun, but kinda hard to use at times), and Koldun lord Zerkova (She is tricky, and very mean, but a blast. I've foughten her a few times and felt the pain she can bring). This does include their Epic version when going to 750 Pts. and up.
All 'Jacks but (Oddly) The Character 'Jacks are useable, most likely haven't been updated. Beast-09 should pop up sometime in that list for sure. Opening the AoI program and using the Iron Rain list it seems Beast-09 is useable, cool.
So no it's not as restrictive as you thought, and if you don't mind using a LOT of Winterguard it's pretty fun (I've been wanting to do this list for a while now, along with my Vlad "Olde Kountry" theme).
Here is a sample list you could use, I made something a little different from the usual suspects and it seems fun while being sufficiently "Hordey" for the point size:
Kommandant Irusk: X Pts.
-Behemoth- X Pts.
Winterguard (8x): X Pts.
- Winterguard UA (Officer & St. Bearer): X Pts.
Winterguard (8x): X Pts.
-Rocketeer: X Pts
WG Mortar Crew: X Pts.
WG Mortar Crew: X Pts.
Looks fun, I've had field experience with Irusk and he can make your opponents movement a living hell, while keeping his own troops relatively safe. Behemoth is often touted as better points spent than 2x Destroyers, and having and using the guy I can't argue his destructive capabilities. Along with the two Mortars and to a lesser extent the Rocketeer, you can lay down 4 AOE's a turn with good accuracy.
Expanding to 750 can easily be done, first step would be to make Irusk his Epic incarnaction, which is even better at troop hording. From there just pick what you like, if I did it I have a personal soft spot for Greylords and the Wardog, so I'd take them with a 'Jack Marshalling Koldun Lord.
What's even better, if you get tired of this theme at any points, ALL these troops are viable and great in normal Khador forces as well, and make a great foundation to build upon.
Hope that helps.
