Welcome to Librarium Online!
I bought the battlebox for cygnar way abck when it came out, and played for a almost a year with just the battle box with people at my local game shop, any ways long story short, brother moved taking much of my WHFB and warmachine stuff with him (left the Battle fleet gothic and 40k stuff that was mine though.) Than left my warmachine (and his) at his friends house in cali who then went to iraq, wife divorced him wife took my warmachine stuff (dont know why) and now finally finally finally, I have been reunited with my battle force, minus the iron clad card....
Its been many years since I have played warmachine and I do not remember the rules very well and I am planning on expanding my army out.
So currently I have the cygnar battle box, is this a viable place to start out from? Will I be able to use all of the jacks in the battle box while I slowly build up?
I am looking at expanding with one box every two weeks for the first little while. Must keep a budget or I will go wild....
So for the first purchase I was thinking of buying either a centurion, long gunners, or gun mages.
Which would be the best to buy first? I am thinking the long gunners, but I am really unfimiliar with the rules. The centurion seems nice, but I dont want to ditch any of my other jacks yet, I want texperience with em first, so i am thinking no more jacks for a while. And I just like the whole fluff behind the gun mages.
So any help on what I should use for a basic 500 point army using the battle box as well?
Hmm, the battle box is solid. The Lancer will be invaluable as an arc node in most of your lists. The Ironclad will serve you as a cheap and effective heavy hitter. The Charger may get some flak, but its a solid 'jack, if a little focus intensive. In Mk II the Charger is given some upgrades to bring it more in line with your other jacks.
In the first buy I'd suggest:
Journieman Warcaster (cheap and can cast arcane shield)
Squire (increased focus, larger control areas, re-rolls on magic attacks!?!? Need I say more?)
10 Long Gunners (double tap, cra and a long range allow you to pick apart the enemy)
These additions will give you models that you (probably) will use in most of your cygnar lists and should take you close to 500 pts.
Keep us updated on your progress!
I agree with Blood_Blade on the recommendations for moving to 500 pts, if you at the UA for the LGs. The main issue I would have with this force is that you don't have any melee troops to slow your enemy down. Also with MkII starting in Jan 2010, you should be careful buying too much, since quite a few units/jacks/solos were weakened in the playtest version of the MkII rules. If the points systems stays as is in MkII then the Battle Box + full LGs + Squire + Junior = 28 pts, so you can fit in a minimum unit of Precursor Knights w/UA to hit an even 35 pts (a common pt-level at my FLGS). And I really like the Precursors w/UA, especially in shooty lists because of Kneel, magic maces, and the Mini Feat.
