A bunch of my friends are supposedly starting warmachine and have suckered me into it as well. It looks like a fun game and it's something to play instead of 40k.
I was drawn to the Mercenaries because the idea is pretty cool, and really liked some of the models. In particular though, I really liked Eiryss, Mage Hunter. I was thinking about using her with Ashlynn D'Elyse and maybe Anastasia di Bray because they seem like they'd fit together, but I don't know if you can do this or if it would even be good. I also don't know where to go from here.
Not at all keen on the Myrymidions (however it's spelt)? Seeing as they're a whole faction of mage hunters like Eiryss...
But then again, their model range is... well, it's still baffling to my eyes. Everything's just too weird to get my head around!
From what I remember of the fluff, I think Ashlynn and Anastasia are essentially on the same side... so I say it makes sense to have them working together. I'm not so sure on what you can do within the rules, though, so you'll have to work that one out for yourself...
Ashlynn and Anastasia are both resistance fighters from Llael, a little country that's been occupied by Khador. They frequently work together in the background material, so it makes perfect sense to use them together in the game too. Eiryss will work with just about anyone, including Ashlynn, and is widely regarded as one of the most useful models in the game.
If you and your friends are only just getting into Warmachine, I'd recomend not purchasing any of the books right now, as the game is currently making the transition between its first and second editions (referred to as Mk.I and Mk.II). A rough version of the Mk.II rulebook is available as a PDF download on the official Privateer Press website, along with rules for all of the models. The Mk.II rulebook comes out in January next year, marking the 'official' switch the Mk.II - until then, I'd suggest you have a look at the rough version of the rulebook, it should tell you everything you need to know.
If you have more questions about Mercenaries or Warmachine in general, I'll be happy to try and answer them! It's always good to see some activity in these parts of LO.
King Kong is my hero - causing property damage and scaring the middle class are two of my favourite things
Well, I like that those two actually go together in fluff xD
What I need help with is the rest of everything x.x
What units would compliment them, work well with them, fit in the same style, ect, ect?
As for the books and what not, yea I was probably just going to get models or something for now and just wait for the MkII
The only real style you have to match is Ashlynn, as she is your warcaster. Anastasia and Eiryss are support solos that generaly work independent from your army.
For 'jacks I'd suggest:
Vanguard or Talon: both are light 'jacks with shields, which provides decent mobility and some solid survivability
Mangler: Reach + Thresher is awesome... period
Nomad or Mule: Nomad is cheap and stabby / Mule is more expensive and shooty, it all depends on what you want
I'm not too familiar with Mercenary troops (I've only played them a few times, and they were generally 'jack heavy), but here are my thoughts after looking at the pdf:
Steelheads: cheap, reliable, effective
Alexia: she used to be game breaking Mk I, I haven't seen too much of her Mk II but she still looks impressive.
Croe's Cutthroats: Great advanced deployed assassins, but remember to go after the troops, these guys can't kill 'jacks very well
Cylena Raefyll: Hard hitting weapon masters that advanced deply, have high def, and are fast to boot! Great unit, but pricey.
Rupert: Buffs troops really well, he'll help your army preform at a higher level.
Gorman: Clouds and lower arm on 'jacks, need I say more?
Other than that I'd look into the pdf's as they have all the rules layed out in them. Also, check out Battle College as it goes over the basics of every model. After that you need to get out, play some games, and find what works for you.
Thanks for the advice, Looking into the PDF based on your suggestions, I like The talon and mule, Alexia and Cylena, Gorman (one of the coolest models I've ever seen btw), Eiryss, and Anastasia all lead by Aslynn.
My question now is points though. I'm looking at this PDF and I don't get the cost of warcasters and the warjack points. Do warcasters not have a cost, but add extra points for jacks or something?
I think that's essentially it. You select your warcaster (free) and they give you some additional points (5 or 6 or whatever it may be) which you can put towards a warjack or two, depending on how much they are.
So, for a 35 point army, it essentially ends up being 35 points + your warcasters warjack points.
I've only made the one list under the new rules, though, but that was my understanding of it. I hope I'm not sending you in the wrong direction here!
The point values generaly played are:
15 and 25 - for smaller games to get you started
35 and 50 - more of the normal range once you've gotten the basics, these are the point values that will likely played at tournaments
You'll choose a point value to build a list on and add your warcasters warjack points (so for Ashlynn you'd bring 41 pts of models in a 35 pt game). These 'extra' points can only be spent on warjacks in your battlegroup, so you can't marshal a 'jack for free points.
Here's a list I through together that I think would be pretty cool and would mesh well.
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Eios
Anastasia di Bray
Gormon di Wulf, Rogue Alchemist
Alexia Ciannor & the Risen
Captain Sam Machorne & the Devil Dogs
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters
Total is 41 points (12 from Warjacks)
This list seems heavy on solos, is that a bad thing?
I don't think I can actually take Croe's Cutthoats with this list, so I switched them out for Captain Sam Machorne & the Devil Dogs. The question now, is do I want to run two talons, or a full Sam and Rupert Corvolo? It's a tough choice imo because Rupert has some nice abilities, but Sam with Two talons sounds terrifying IMO, especially since It lets Ashlynn boost the Mule.
