Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello, all those out there in forum land!
Yes, with the coming of Warmachine: Mark II, I (along with many others, it seems) have finally decided it is time to begin my Warmachine army of choice; Cryx.
I'm not sure what drew me to the Dragonfather's side. I think I've always had a penchant for the bad guys. I like the colour scheme Privateer Press uses for them (though I'm not sure I'll try and replicate it). And of all the factions, I've always thought the Cryx heavies looked the best.
Now, a word of warning as we begin; I am slow. Painfully slow, as my title implies. Part of the reason I haven't started Warmachine until now was that I was determined to finish my Vampire Counts army first, but I didn't want to miss the boat this time around so I thought I'd go ahead and ignore that resolution. I just thought I'd mention that so you don't get all excited and expect weekly updates, because it's highly unlikely that will happen.
Another contributing factor to this, of course, is the fact that for now I only have the one model - the new sculpt of Skarre Ravenmane. I haven't mucked around with her too much, although I did drill a few holes in her gigantic blade because frankly it just looked too heavy to be of any use.
Here's my progress thus far (I hope the picture works...);
Smart boy that I am, I only took a frontal shot when most of the work I've done has been on her cape which is at the back. Ah well - it's just a whole bunch of grey, nothing special. My blending leaves a lot to be desired (I'm working on it, though).
My intentions are to use a fair bit of gold on the metals, and a purple glow instead of the traditional green. I thought it might be too much purple when combined with her coat, but the glow should be a lot lighter so hopefully it won't be a problem.
I'm not sure about her boots though. The privateer press paintjob has them in brown, which might do, but I was wondering about a dark purple. Or black. Hmmm, ze possibilities...
I suppose I could mention the one game I played with Skarre, but I don't think it's worth it. I stuffed up my movement something chronic, had one of my units standing in a puddle when Nemo let off some chain lightning (how else do you explain almost the whole unit dying? Maybe they were all holding hands and singing or something...), and then forgot a whole bunch of stuff when I got into combat. I even had an opportunity to throw something with my Seether, and I completely overlooked it - how could I do that? The whole reason I got into this game was so I could throw 'jacks around like bowling balls!
So yeah, my first game sucked. Gotta start somewhere, though!
Enough from me! I'll be back when Skarre is more presentable, or if there are questions that crop up from any of my ramblings. Cheers!
That sounds like a nasty touch of pure death from nemo. Its a shame we have such low command values, so are standing shoulder to shoulder. I take it you avoided the Skarre bomb then?
Thats the new skarre sculpt right? How many pieces is it in?
For the glow, why not try a redder colour of purple than the cape itself due to blood magic?

Seeing as the computer happens to be on again... I've done a little more painting. And I took a rear view of the model, even though I haven't really done that much more work to it.
I'm pretty happy with how her boots came out. I'm also liking the look of the metals - I used a mix of Regal Blue and Boltgun Metal, and I think it's come out rather nicely. Needs some more work, though.
Oh, the base is also not done - just a mishmash of watered down browns for now, but I'm intending to head towards a sandy look eventually.
All this progress! I'm making a filthy liar out of myself, aren't I?
I was going along nicely here, but ran into a few complications.
With the blue look of the armour I decided to go for a straight red glow - except I'm really not sure how to make it work. Does anyone have any advice on the matter, or any reference tutorials or pictures they know of?
Thanks in advance for any help received...
Oh, sorry - things like the backpack vents, the depressions in the armour... it's more pronounced on bonejacks, I guess, but most of the cryx models seem to have some king of 'glow' coming from within them, or at least are painted to look as such. The studio scheme utilises a green glow, but I was going to replace it with red.
So, in Skarre's case, in the mouth and eye sockets of the skulls on her backpack, and the slots in the extensions on which the skulls are mounted; in the slots on the unpainted part of the backpack, perhaps on that little panel at the bottom, then (in the front view) the slots on her chestplate and her eyes were all going to feature a red glow, or something like it. I've sort of done a base red, worked up to an orange-red, but I'm not sure if I should continue adding orange or start working towards white.
Does that make things any clearer? I guess, essentially, I was wanting to have blueish looking armour that looks like it has something red glowing behind it and shining through the vents/slots wherever they appear. Or wherever I can be bothered.
I'd avoid using the orange GW based light red paints deadstar, and just go for the white colour. I struggled myself since i just finished painting my cankerworm and the little fella has lots of glowing green everywhere.
I'm going to be getting thattasty new skarre model soon so ill be using your painting as a reference, just to put some more stress on you.
