Hello all, it's been quite awhile since I've been active on this board, though I have been lurking here and there keeping track of specific threads. Mainly I've followed the progress of King Ulrik Flamebeard's Scions of Ra. Watching the absolutely beautiful army progress to what it is now was very inspirational.
Over the course of the past 2 months i have begun collecting Warhammer 40k once again. I haven't played 40k since 4th Edition released (i used to play Imperial Guard). Since i've played Warhammer Fantasy (playing both Empire & now Ogre Kingdoms). I've begun collecting the Tau Empire and have the entire army ready for painting. I'm attempting to go with a desert themed army; battle hardened and war torn. The army itself will be composed of zero vehicles; and will maximize use of markerlights. While in game terms i've heard this is a rather ineffective strategy, i prefer playing a highly themed or fluffy army over an army designed specifically to win any day.
Below are all the models i have built to present:
Tau Commander (Forgeworld XV81)
3 XV8 Crisis Battlesuits
5 Tau Fire Warriors
1 XV22 Broadside Battlesuits
6 Gun Drones
6 Shield Drones
4 Marker Drones
Below are the models i have yet to build:
Tau Commander (Converted GW Commander)
27 Fire Warriors
3 XV22 Broadside Battlesuits
6 Gun Drones
2 Shield Drones
9 Sniper Drones
3 Sniper Squad Spotters
Obviously i've got a bit of work to do; but I've decided to put together this log just so that i can monitor my progress, as well as taking comments & criticisms that may help both my painting & building skills.
As of yet only one model is complete (a firewarrior shown below) and one model is partially painted (a broadside shown below). The three main colours of the army are Calthan Brown (Foundation); Khemri Brown (Foundation); and Catachan Green (standard Citadel).
Fire Warrior Pic:
I attempted to do battle damage, as can be seen on the helmet, edges of the shoulder pad, torso & weapon. I'm going for a very natural, military look. I don't like the flashy army's of 40k (except maybe for the Marines & Nids), therefore, i'm going for a more realistic wartime look for the army.
Pic of the Broadside (VERY work in progress):
I kept the same colour scheme, though i didn't know how i wanted the battlesuits to look, so i decided on a stippling effect. This model is VERY much a work in progress, no battle damage has been added, and only one weapon has been worked on, the green could still use a layer - there's lots to do i just wanted to show everyone what to expect.
The two models together:
Anyway, thats about it for now; i'm currently bases a couple of models getting them ready for priming. I may take some pre-priming pictures of what i have built so far. Hope you all enjoy, all comments and criticisms welcome. I plan on updating at least once a week with pictures.
Thanks all for looking.
So today i worked a bit on the Commander, finished building him and worked a bit on his base. Below are pictures of him. All of my Battlesuits are magnetized to the base (for ease of painting) but will be glued in place once painting is complete. I'm a beginner when it comes to scultping, so the sandbags are...mediocre at best (i used procreate - it's great stuff). The Guardsmen hasn't been glued yet and i may decide to use a different pose (or even a different race such as an Ork) by the time i end up finishing the base. Also, anyone who hasn't worked with the Forgeworld Battlesuits - YOU MUST DO IT - the molds are fantastic, so easy to build & reposition, absolutely wonderful models.
Here is the first of my Shas'Vre. The weapons are removable at this point, and the model is also removable from the flying stem. I have some minor greenstuff work to do on the bent leg (filler & such) shouldn't be difficult. I attempted to model this guy after the Crisis on the Tau Empire Codex cover. I think it came out similar to how it is pictured on the Codex. The weapons swap and lack of antennae (something all my battlesuits will lack - with the exception of the Commanders) give it still a unique feel.
Here is my second Shas'Vre. Again i've got some gap filling to do on the legs, and some smoothing out of other places. This guy is magnetized to the base. I'm not a huge fan of his positioning, he is the first of the Crisis i built. Originally both of his arms were straight, i changed this so that his right arm is bent again, i greatly prefer this look over the former look.
Here is the final of the Shas'Vre. He was modelled after the Crisis found on page 34 of the Codex and i believe (though i may be wrong) the cover of the old Crisis boxes. Unfortunately i found his legs would be too wide for the 40mm round bases, so he's kind of squeezed onto the base. Again i'm fairly happy with the look of this model, not as much greenstuff work is necessary on this guy as the other two.
I've got one more Crisis to build, a Shas'El Commander; currently i'm in the planning stages, as i want his Crisis to have the "experimental" feel. I don't know how exactly i want to change the main torso, but i know i want to.
I've begun work on the remaining 3 broadsides; finishing up all of the torsos, the legs should be attached by the end of the day as well as the heads. I may try some unorthodox positioning on these guys also to add a bit of flavor.
Thanks everyone for looking. Questions, Comments and Criticisms welcome.
Alright well progress continues on the army, albeit slowly. Here's a picture of the whole army (kinda...)
At this point i've got to build:
6 Sniper Drones
1 Sniper Drone Spotter
3 Broadside Battlesuits
2 Shield Drones
6 Gun Drones
27 Fire Warriors
I'm delaying the Fire Warrior building as long as possible...i know i'm not going to enjoy it very much; and i'm still holding onto the fact that i'll figure out some cool ways to convert them and give them a more unique feel.
I've already got plans for the final Snipe Drone Spotter to give him a unique feel. The broadsides will each have slightly converted poses. So as the army progresses, i don't know if i want to start painting more...or if i should finish building.
Anyway, update again probably Thursday or Friday.
They look awesome so far. I like the weathering you have done on the crisis suits.
As someone who hates the assembly stage of building an army, I have to give you props for putting in the effort to make every single minature unique and special.
