*makes encouraging noises about trying freehand*

I'd thoroughly suggest getting a 'real' image of the griffon, then drawing it a few times, then even practicing painting it onto paper or something, before starting on the model.

Try splitting it into simple-ish shapes and lines, that you can do one at a time, to build it up.
Once you are confident about the lines and shapes that make it up, you will be fine =)

heh, I shall try tomorrow. I cannot be arsed now, but instead am going to look at Grimgore's base. I have an idea...

But thanks for the tips, I shall test until I am happy enough to attempt it. =)

Default Grimgore Ironhide

OK, putting aside the Griffon for the time being - and no, I have not attempted the freehand or worked on his axe - I decided before I got back into my dwarfs I should look at working on another fantasy miniature. Thus, I chose a big, bad orc. Grimgore Ironhide.

Now, I need to really work on the skin here, it is highlighted but my photo has really, really, really washed out the work on it. So tomorrow, I'm going to get back to his skin and work on making those highlights actually visible. So, you might not have to comment on, except the obvious.

One thing, something I cannot believe I never did before was to add a touch of washing up liquid to my primer. I have to paint the undercoat on by hand as I live in student halls and I don't fancy a trip downstairs to spray. *shrug* But still, that worked a treat. Does however mean that I must do a good few coats, as you can see the undercoat does look a bit thin in places.

Click the image to open in full size.

Now, anyone good with doing some good, old battle worn, rusted armour? I need to work on that, but skin is first. The picture showed me how bad it looks on camera, but not too bad in person. I guess my usual more subtle style needs working on.

As usual, all comments and criticism welcomed. =)

Old battered armour is all about washes, washes and more washes.
Also them pesky tromp l'oiel effects.

Check out some of Ash's and Andusciassus' minis, and look really carefully at the metallics, as they tend to be pretty damn fine.

So, to re-iterate, washes. Also glazes.
Try the following colours: Browns, dark reds, dark blues, oranges, black.

completely disagree Kuffeh, orks are all about stippling, ideally with scorpion green, blazing orange and tenticle pink, trust me

I am assured Iron Bru also helps

Also, I'd like to point out that I am a little dress wearing fairy. For the record. And I love my pink tutu.

I have another way of doing battered armour that gives quite a rusty effect.

Basecoat the metal area with a dark brown, scorched brown or anything similar firstly. From here on in stippling is your friend. Move up to a lighter brown, I find vomit works well and stipple this lightly onto your metal area until you are happy with the coverage. From here then repeat the process moving to a dark red and finally with a light stippling with blazing orange. This will give you a very rusted oxidised effect especially if you edge the rusty area with some metal scratches or with the armour's original colour.

Don't know if that helps any, but its how I like to do ork/orc metal.

Thanks for the useful replies, except my fake twin there, who like usual spams. I will have a crack at the armour later. I am just really disappointed with the skin, it looks decent in person. =( I did the following:

Orchide (foundation colour) + Chaos Black
+ orchide
+ Olive Green (VGC)
+ Catachan Green
+ Cammo Green
+ Kammando Khaki

It is much too subtle for the camera to pick it up. I think I'll add a touch of snot green to lighten it.

Thanks for the comments. =)

What, you wanted something helpfull? well ok, I am sure I am teaching you to suck eggs but:

The skin is very dark for orks but looks darker still because the rest of the model is still black, paint the rest up and the skin will look better, although I would still tend to go lighter with the highlights

ultimately I think I would pester G on Orc skin if I had problems, he has painted enough of it recently

on the metal, you know how to do metal, to rust it more leave it in water,, erm no use a brown wash, personnaly I would use chestnut ink, but any wash/glasie technique with a brown will give you something

Regards
Chered
PS hope the rash has cleared up and you can quit the anti-biotics and sticking to orange juice

That's better. =p

I have added snot green and goblin green to my catachan green base and the skin looks much better. I want to keep the highlights from being too bright, being as Grimgore is the biggest, baddest greenskin around. =D

Thanks all for the help on the metals, will hopefully start them today or tomorrow. =)

Also, I have added my recent few minis to my CMON profile. Dunno when they will be accepted but be nice for some votes on my stuff, and those new ones. -__^
