Ok, first test for my new look dwarf army. I haven't done anything for the base - ideas required there please. But the colour scheme is based upon my fluff, and I wanted a nice bright blue, to be marked off with a light grey. The metal - golden - is not actually gold but a brass colour, I like the look. =)
All comments and criticism welcomed, as usual. =) I am quite liking this look though.

First off, I like the brass, too, along with the rest of it. Well done.
As to the base, I remember thumbing through the PP 2007 catalog a while back, and seeing Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator mounted on a "wood" base. The basically took popsicle sticks (I'm sure you could use balsa or plasticard) cut into "planks," shaped to fit the base, then glued in place. I'm sure they were painted too. Made for a different look. It was simple, almost bare, really, but it still looked "finished." An interesting idea.
like it matey, be nice to see some freehand on the shield, which incidentally appears to be folding flatpack, have Ikea made the book of grudges now?
Everything you have been told is a lie!

Canew - Hm, interesting idea, but I feel a wooden floor would not work as well with an army that dwells in the depths of the mountains.
Chered - Its not Ikea, Homebase. Currently used to fool stupid elves. Seems it works. I will do something with the shield, to fill it but as it's a test mini I didn't bother. Ideas on a base?

I worry that building up a base around him too much would make him look like he has no feet. I think I would go for building up a little "hillock" under him, if you want them under ground, then do him underground, can you do stalagmites?

The scheme looks very clean, which seems to be at odds with the fact that Dwarves live under the mountains. Unless these are very fussy Dwarves, and then it makes perfect sense.
As for the bases, I think something rocky might be in order. You could crumble up some cork and have them all standing on debris, or you could find some way to build up sand. They'd end up being taller with both of these, so they'd have to learn how to attack the chest and not the knees of anyone they're fighting.

I built up my last dwarfs, using a piece of cork. I however found that it looked a little stupid, and too fiddly really. I want something simple but effective.

Slate?
It's useful because it has no scale and can be found almost anywhere for free!
Here are some of my examples...
A Wraithlord base where I have used bits of slate and some Fine Soil from Woodland Scenics:

Also here's some of my bases from my soon to be revealed Dark Angels Veterans

What I have done is glued at least two bits of slate on to the base with superglue(preferably the gel type) Once this has dried properly I then build up layers of Fine Soil to produce a scenic base with a bit of bulk. I get my inspiration when I'm down at my grandparents house in South Devon. When we go on the compulsory walks around the hills I look at all the granite and slate outcrops and imagine then as bases. It's the only way I avoid being bored, lol.
I hope this helps, if not I'll try better next time! ;Y
