Gather round children, let me tell you a tale of how I fell to the ruinous powers and amassed a huge army of vile dark 40k chaosy goodness in such a short time. (If you wanna skip my story, go to the bottom for the first pics.)
My story starts with me winning our local groups 40k league (yay!). The prize was a $90 battleforce box of my choice. Well, that was the week that the new chaos armybox came out. I had seen much of the new figs from the previous issue of White Dwarf and really liked them. I had always wanted a Space Marine army and asked my wonderful store proprietor would allow me to use the $90 towards the army box. He agreed and I was on my way.
I remembered I had an old predator that I had gotten a long time ago and wallah! I had a predator as well.
Fortune continued with me as my local store had a sale and was getting rid of some stuff. I came across a reaper mini that I thought would work pretty well for a Greater Daemon. It was on sale for $15. I also remembered that giant box of Mage Knight figures that I had gotten so long ago, but couldn't part with or throw away just yet. 49 models later and I have 4-5 good sized squads of Lesser Daemons.
While stopping in at another comic shop, I noticed they were clearing out their 40k stuff. The only thing they had left was three Doomrider boxes. This is a chaos marine biker with a Slaneesh character blister inside. They were on sale for $2 each. Two bucks! Sold! (I have since sold the other two blisters on ebay for about nine bucks.)
Here is where things get ridiculous. My local store held an Apocalypse event that I went to. I was looking at the Chaos battleforce as a possible addition to my army. They were having a raffle with a lot of great prizes that their local GW rep and gotten for them. They gave away some paint sets, a codes, some blisters, but guess who won the big prize....that's right, it was me. Can you guess what it was??? It was the new Chaos battleforce! I couldn't believe my ears!
Add to that a new predator and a rhino that I got from a GW gift cert that I got on my birthday and I was all set. Well almost.
You see the same store that I mentioned before? Well the owner recently had one of his "bits sales." I had heard the tales of these sales, but had never before been able to attend. I got there ten minutes after the doors opened and I was almost too late. Fortune again smiled, and I got a ton of great stuff, including four more chaos bikes, another older predator, an old rhino, a razorback (which is now another rhino and added the lascannon upgrade for my defiler), and a bunch of chaos bits. That isn't including the Eldar and Orks that I got as well. It was freaking spectacular!
Now, I have taken on the Tale of Painters to help me get these guys painted. I have chosen to do Black Legion for a few reasons.
1. It is a simple, but nice looking paint scheme.
2. I think I can do them quickly, but to a decent standard.
3. Black Legion's fluff allows for other groups to join them - Nurgle, Tzeentch, etc.
4. I like how they look - which is really what it's all about now, isn't it.
I'll post my first month's entry below.
I have spent most of this month assembling what I have. It has been fun, as modeling and converting is probably my most favorite part of the hobby aspect. I chose to do two of the older models first to try out the paint scheme and see if just using Armory black primer as the basecoat would work. I think they came out rather nice.
Rhino - This rhino had seen better days. When I got it, it was done in a glossy black, red, and silver paintjob that looked terrible. I added some chaos bits and am pleased with the results.
Overall, I am happy with them. I did them pretty quick, but think they will do fine for what I want. I was surprised at how well the Armory primer worked as both a primer and basecoat. I actually just did what was listed in the Vindicator masterclass on the GW site. It is found in Black Gobbo 102, if I am not mistaken.

Nice looking tanks, and great story to start the thread. I wish for that kind of fortune! Anyway, congratulations on all the great finds, and I'm looking forward to seeing your army.
In the pipe:
Demon Prince with Wings
Didn't do a ton of converting, but I'm happy with how it looks. I changed the head by cutting off the horns and resculpting the head, adding a set of spikes on top. It kind of gives him a punk rocker look. Then, of course I added wings. I got these manticore wings off of Ebane for $8 and am happy with how they look overall. They're a little small, but in comparison with the figure they look nice.
Also in the works
I got this for Tanksgiving, the event where you build a tank and battle with it. I built this in a few hours, and am happy overall with it, especially with the magnetized bolter/havoc launcher.
Well I've been lax on posting here, I'd rather be painting and modelling than photoing and posting.
Here is what is accomplished so far:
Completed Demon Prince
2nd Predator (Fully magnetized)
Greater Demon/2nd Demon Prince
Squad 10 Man Chaos Marines w/Metlagun Chaos Glory
Here is what I'm working on now
Scratch Built Obliterators
So far, I've had no jokers for the TOP (yay me!) and following Cyric's example, have created an army list to be completed. This will focus me to actually getting a real army together.
Here is the list:

5 Chosen - 130 Pts
Total Roster Cost: 1999
What this means - Some of the stuff I've painted I'm not planning on using right now. That's fine, some of it I did just to test things out, like the first predator I painted. This also means the end of my journey will be a lot of troops, something I'm not looking forward to. I find that I like painting vehicles and large models better than a lot of troops. Maybe I need to do each one individually. That may take longer, but it would make it less monotonous. Or maybe do groups of 5. I wanted to do the Vindicator next, but I might wait so that I can use it as a reward for getting through some of those troops.
Thanks for reading.
Wow.. Those Obliterators look amazing 8XI can't wait to see them painted up.
and that deamon prince is also a very nice looking model!
Keep up the good work;Y
I'm Useless :D
Here are some more pics of the Obliterators
The bodies are mega-armoured nobs that I had laying around without heads and arms. I added spawn and tierminator bits with some different weapons laying around. For basically free I got three unique Obliterators and didn't have to shell out $66 for them. I'm very happy with that. I'm almost done with Spikey and am now working on Chainy, who is turned out to be quite a monster to paint. Lot's of weird bits and pieces, but it should turn out pretty nice. Pics to come later.
Those are fantastic Oblits, as has been noted. I'm really looking forward to seeing them painted.
