With all the time constraints associated with my Grand Tournament beasts of chaos army and the stress involved, I decided to start a new project to be worked on in my own time. With the imminent release of Daemon of Chaos some of the best models GW has ever produced will no longer be sold. Luckily, I have a unit of 12 metal Daemonettes sitting in my army case, primed white and never used. I bought them when I played 40k as they used to be awesome. Then when I moved to fantasy I realized the rules for them weren’t anywhere near as good, so I didn’t bother using them again. Now however, I have a reason to, and decided that a small Slaanesh/Tzeentch themed list would be cool. So, this project was born.
I am going to start small. I already have 12 Daemonettes, so a box of the new plastic ones, and a Herald, should be enough to get me started. I have worked out that, with the 22 Daemonettes I’ll have, if I make 2 unit fillers on 50mm bases, I’ll have enough models for 2 units of 15 Daemonettes, with a herald to lead them. For the herald, I am thinking that the new Winged Vampire Lord model, with considerable work, would make a pretty cool herald. So, onto the Maelstrom Games website and ordered the models (along with a Corpse Cart to be cut up for bits – that kit is an excellent source of basing details).
As I said at the beginning of the topic, this will be done in my own time, so I it will be slow going but I will try and convert and paint my minis to the best of my abilities. This may seem a little arrogant, but converting has always been where my enjoyment lay within this hobby, and my painting has always been rushed. But having seen a (quite frankly) awful paint job put on a commission job I did a while ago, I have seen how a lack of patience can ruin an army. Hense no timescales and deadlines.
As soon as I receive the models we shall see where this goes…
Well, hopefully the models should be here tomorrow, meaning this painting diary can kick off. In the mean time, I have been pondering how to keep the theme without sacrificing half the army list. My solution? Counts As.
Below is a list of how I could make suitably themed models that "count as" the nurgle and khorne daemons I wont be buying the models for.
* Herald - Painbringer of Slaanesh - basically a big, handsome, musclely humanoid with lots of weapons - precision rather than brute force - a daemonic weaponmaster, if you will.
* Bloodletters - Excruciators of Slaanesh - Male daemonettes with great weapons - plastic daemonette legs with equivalent male torsos, etc. May take some serious work.
* Flesh Hounds - Pain Bringers of Slaanesh - Using the leftover daemonette bits from the above unit, and the plastic spiders from the gobbo spider riders to make "driders" from D&D.
* Blood Crushers - Agonizors - armoured daemonettes with great weapons/whips/etc mounted on boobworms.
* Herald - Changelord - constantly mutating tzeentch beastie - like a horror on crack, or something that has spent too much time around Morghur. Highest point of the changeling "life cycle" - when the changeling form "stabilizes", when it's will becomes strong enough to hold together it's constantly mutating form, a Changelord is formed.
* Plaguebearers - Greater Changelings - lesser daemon versions of Changelords. Middle point of the changeling "life cycle" - created when changelings merge together and become one entity.
* Nurglings - Changelings - teeny tiny daemons. Lowest point of the changeling "life cycle" - when a tzeentchian daemon changes it's form, sometimes pieces of it's essence separate from it, and thus changelings are born.
* Plaguebeast - Changebeast - sometimes greater changelings merge together as changelings are known to do, forming a barely contained miasma of mutation, warping all around them. These vast behemoths are known as Changebeasts.
The "Nurgle" Daemons will all be kind of like daemonic spawn of various types, although all 3 types will retain the same basic shape (so no units of random models - each unit will maintain a "uniform" look).
Any thoughts or critique on this idea?
Well, the models arrived on saturday, and although I haven't gotten much done so far, I have got a few minis to show you.
Firstly here is a WIP mini, my take on the special character The Changeling. He'll count as a Tzeenth Herald when I don't use the character:
Next up are some early shots of my Nurgling bases. After reading the background in the new book of Slaanesh's domain, the description of the first circle of excess got me thinking, and I thought that I'd make a unit of the Daemonic Birthlings it mentions. Basically the first circle represents greed, with golden statues covered in gems, etc. Only thing is, the gems are actually eggs and if you touch them tiny daemons hatch out of them and burrow under your flesh, eating you from the inside out until only your flesh is left, which turns to gold and you become a statue too. I thought they'd make great Slaanesh themed nurglings, so started on some bases straight away:
Lastly is a early WIP of a unit filler for my Daemonettes, the Well of Souls.
Let me know what you think.
Okay, UPDATE time
After checking over the Daemons of Chaos book I have written a short army list using the mini's I have and I easily have at least a 1000pts list I can make out of the models I have. Whether an effective list can be made is another thing entirely.
In total, from all the minis scavenged from my pre-splitting armies, and those I have bought specifically for the task, I have:
1 Slaanesh Herald
1 Tzeentch Herald
22 Daemonettes (plus another 8 in unit fillers)
3 Nurgling bases
10 Flesh Hounds (Spider rider spiders)
1 Bloodcrusher (Boobworm)
I haven't really done that much with the army since the last update, although I have taken some images of what I have.
I've also picked up a box of Pink Horrors to add to the Tzeentch contingent.
Well, here are photos of the stage I am at with the army ATM, I haven't a clue what to do with the bases yet, any thoughts would be most appreciated. I am thinking perhaps the bases should help represent what aspect of the chaos pantheon the units represent, as it wont be immediately recognizable what units from the army list they represent. How I do that I don't yet know, so I'd be grateful for suggestions.
Please keep you image sizes down to 800px wide or lower. Thanks. - KU
Now the characters:
Laradian the Vile, the Soul Thief (he'll count as Skulltaker until I can make a better model:
Lastly is my initial attempt at an Agoniser (counts as a Blood Crusher):
I need to find ways to make him look more daemonic, although I am not sure how. Suggestions?

Well, whilst I have been working on my Grand Tourney army, I haven't been idle with my daemons either. Below are my WIP converted Pink Horrors. They are made from the 40k Kroot Carnivore models, and green stuff.
See, it's not just Tzaangors and Chosen Knights you can make out of those plastics
Please note the metal Horror mini for scale comparisons.

Now the only two I have that at a stage for you to see what I am trying to do. The one on the left will be the unit champion:
They didn't exactly come out as planned, but they were all done today in the space of 4 hours from sprue to green stuff, so are a bit rushed. I aim to clean them up as I go on. Let me know what you think.

they look OK not awesome but that's personal because I like the original models better but it's great moddeling and a fun project I intent to follo from now on. very curious about you next bit.
I really quite like these. The greenstuff work is nicely done and I especially like the unit fillers, good work there. The horrors look quite good, however, I'm not that big a fan of the face you've done on the leaping one. Just looks out of place to me. Keep up the good work!
It's the nose, isn't it? I was thinking it didn't look right, and will probably change it tonight.
yeah its the nose
Just a quick update, I was rummaging through the missus' bitz box last night and came across an early 6th edition Lord of Change, which she generously donated to my cause, so it looks like the list is going from a Slaanesh with a hint of Tzeentch list to a Tzeentch with a hint of Slaanesh list.
So now I have:
1 Lord of Change,
1 Tzeentch Herald/Changeling
1 Slaaneshi Herald
18 Pink Horrors,
30 Daemonettes (including 2 unit fillers)
10 Flesh Hounds
3 Nurgling Bases
This little warband, through scrounging and converting, has become a full fledged army.
Gods dammit I have a lot of work to do.
