I've been poking around various hobby shops in the houston area for a couple weeks, looking for a good wight lord on foot model. They don't seem to exist, the only one I found was a guy holding a banner and some absurd looking horns coming out of his head. What I did find was a Chaos Chosen champion model which fitted with my conception of what a wight lord should look like.
The first thing I had to do was fit him on a 20x20 base, since he came with a 25x25 base, which would screw up any rank-and-file grave guard unit he was in. I didn't have any 20x20 slotted bases handy, so using an x-acto knife, and many prayers to St. Jude for intercession so I wouldn't remove any digits later, I carved out a slot for him to slide into on his base.
I'd also bought some GG while I was at the store, and I decided to give him one of their heads. He also got a lovely shield to go with it, since he was going to be a sword+board kind of guy.
Before I started base coating him:
Sorry for the blurry shot.
I base coated everything but his obvious skeleton bits, the handle of his axe, and his belt, in chaos black. The above mentioned bits got coated with bestial brown.
I then took dwarven bronze and did a 2/3rd 1/3rd dilution with chaos black. I was going to initially use 1/2 1/2 mix, but the resulting pigment was almost black in color.
My dark bronze color was then applied to all his metal bits.
Decide what color scheme my army is going to have o_O
Paint the cloth
Paint the leather
Paint the skele bits
Give him a sexy base
TO BE CONTINUED
Looking good so far.
That Chaos Champion body is such a great base to start from. I've always liked that model, so by default I like this conversion!
Looking forward to seeing that sexy base as well
Thanks for your reply.
I agree, I love the chaos warriors models. I'm waiting on the new mortals of chaos book before I start building that army, though.
Is it just me, or is it a cast iron &%$&^ to get any sort of pewter character model to line up with the new RnF plastics?
What unit are you planning on putting him in? Grave Guard?
I've had a bit of trouble myself just getting the Grave Guard themselves to rank up, and this model seems to have quite a wide span on it, just because of the pose. So I can see why there would be problems.
Haven't played with the new skellies yet though, so I don't know much about them.
Yep, he's going into GG. He's essentially going to have to hang out on one end of the unit, because otherwise his axe is going to smack into the nearby ranks.
ON TO THE PAINTING!
I mixed about 75/25 boltmetal and chaos black, and used this to coat all of the exposed chainmail on the model. My thinking on this was: My wights and skeletons will all be bronze age-era corpses. Since my wight lord would obviously be the most important figure in their culture, he's also the only guy who could afford iron armor. I didn't want to make it too obvious, plus it would little weird to have an all shiny grey metal when all his followers were battered old bronze skeletons.
His belt knife also has iron trim, and he has an iron belt buckle.
Now, even though the bronze is not nearly as shiny as before, it's still too bright in my opinion. So, I mixed up brown ink, green ink, and blue ink in a 1:2:2 ratio, then added a dab of bestial brown and chaos black. Mixed it all up, added about a teaspoon worth of water to thin it, and I make a very, very nice looking wash. I'm not too sure the following photos do it justice:
Essentially, the resulting coloration is exactly the color of this old bronze cannon:
He's looking quite spiffy - nice attention to detail too, what with the not-too-obvious iron armour. Great job so far!
This is a great conversion. I've been agonizing over what to do about my wight king BSB. The GW model is hideous. This looks like a great possibility as I could mod the axe hand to hold a banner.
Any more photos? Was it much trouble ranking him up with the smaller VC infantry?
