    Thanks everybody,
One of them looks to be missing an arm though, is he going to have a standard or something?
Umm whoops yes, he is going to have an arm and that spear will become a standard.

An easy fix I had would be to change the base scheme. I wonder if a more earthy tone would break things up and it would be easy to change rather than changing all the armor.
Thats quite a good idea, I will try just the grass to begin with before I add snow, I am pretty terrible at basing, they are either way too busy and look ridiculous or too sparse and extremely boring. I just have to find that happy median.

Great work on your stuff so far, All! I do like how you're using NMM for your troops. While normal metal is cool, I think it adds something extra to the minis. Great work so far and rep for you!

I've found basing to actually be pretty easy. I just use some modelling sand and put white glue down, dip the fig in modelling sand, then paint a base coat on the sand. Just slop it on. THen I drybrush a few different colors on top of that. Then glue down some static grass. I think its a lot easier and looks a lot better than just grass or bare sand/rock. Just me though Do whatever floats your boat.

Thanks for the rep Jake,I hope you keep painting your elves, you had made a really good start and I really liked that hero you painted for the defiance competition.

I decided to stick with the snow base, I think that it has come out pretty well.

As usual it isn't totally finished, I haven't done the extreme highlights (white) on anyone yet but they look alright all the same.

If anyoe has any good ideas about what to put on the shields I would love to know, right now I am just thinking of a rune or maybe a white eagles feather.

that red is pretty on your shields, the colors are well balanced on the models.
could go for the rising sun, which you have on some of the chestplates

any chance you will give some details/secrets on how you did your snowbase?

That's a good idea for the shields, they definitely need something on them, they are pretty bright at the moment.

As for the snow bases, you can see what they were like with the rubble and large rocks on them in earlier pics. I glued some grass on them here and there, then added the snow as per Kuffies tutorial here. I added a bit of white paint in as well as the glue, water and Baking Soda, just to give better coverage. Then I painted it on, allowing for the snow to shrink somewhat. I photographed them before tehy had dried as well so it looks more like slush than powder like now.

Here is a picture of what a feather one would look like, I quite like it, the shield isn't as red as the ones on the actual spearmen, it's missing its last few coats.

Nice looking unit there. The feather design is interesting for a shield, but the shield looks rather plain and empty. I think it needs something else, or a larger feather. What about some elfish runes?

I agree with Kuffy, I think the shield needs a little something extra, and I don't think a larger feather is the answer. Maybe some trim along the edge of the shield or a run in one of the corners. The feather looks quite nice though, and the unit itself is shaping up very well.

Thanks again guys, added a border and a rune to the shield, this makes it a little too complex to be able to do for he whole unit, I would go blind and start doing an even poorer job of keeping the border straight.

That's some pretty amazing work! I can understand you not wanting to replicate it on the entire unit, I can imagine it's pretty fiddly, time consuming stuff!

    Great work!
