Rep Power: 78 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Alright, it has been over a month since my last post, and that is just wrong. I have been working, I swear! Unfortunately the past month has seen many projects started, but not a one completed. That makes me a sad (and ashamed) panda. So here is a look into my scattered brain. So I started out with the Dire Avengers, as promised. Changed the colors scheme slightly, and got a good portion of the way through 5 of them. I even stopped halfway through painting their faces orange, that's how distracted I got. ![]() ![]() Well I blame GW for that one, and my local shop too. War of the Ring is coming out and the store was abuz with the news and fancy new rulebooks. With lots of people jumping on the bandwagon, and with a bit of enthusiasm for the new rules myself, I painted up 12 Rohan horses. Not the riders, mind you, I didn't get that far. (no pictures) Cause then I went back to the eldar, thanks to the 40k campaign that got started up. Turn 1. Turn 2. Rather than finish my DA, I started working on some new jetbikes. 1 is finished, 2 are complete except for the stripes (still not sure what other patters I want), and the last 3 just have their base coat colors. ![]() I found a new Hobby shop recently, and they are super nice. They are also hosting a small 40k tournament, and I will be bringing my Sisters of Battle to that. So in preparation I stopped painting my jetbikes partway through and painted up all my old sisters to my current standard. I plan to work on the rhino, and do some nice freehanding on that as soon as I finish THIS: ![]() ![]() [What the heck happened to the picture quality on that one!?] This guy isn't a surprise if you are in the Hordes section of the forum. I really think hordes is the game for me. I enjoy painting, but often get distracted by new projects and models because painting an entire army gets to be a chore. With such small forces, and with every model being different I think I might be able to keep focused easier. Let me know what you think about side 1 of this guy. As you read this I have probably started on side 2 already. Not sure what I will do with the armor/straps, there might be too much brown on him already. Very, very nice. Them eldars are awesome sause. Also, an argus! Yay! They aren't actually as awful as everyone says they are, so do give them a try in a game or two... -t.

Thanks guys. Those eldar are my babies, I slowly chip away at them, and eventually my army will get finished. I've only played 2 games of Hordes so far, and all I have is the Circle box set. The first game the Argi were great with doppler bark, the second time they just didn't seem to do anything. I still ended up winning but it seemed like all the work was done by the warpwolf, and then Kaya came in for the caster kill with her feat. Do you have any suggestions on how to use the argus? Their animus seems limited to me, but maybe it's just because I am new. They also don't seem to do much damage either, I have to boost their MAT and POW rolls every time. All I can figure is that somehow with the +1 bonuses from Kaya they will actually do something. The other thing I figured (and it worked in the first game but not the second) is using the warpwolf to knock something down then bark at them making them loose both their actions. |

The animus is pretty poor in the starter box game, but once you start playing larger games it can be very useful as an extra layer of protection, with a few cheap troops (Wolves of Orboros) around your warlock, and that animus up, it's going to be very hard for someone to get at them in melee. Argii work best in pairs, use one to slam an enemy warbeast (preferably into something squishy behind it), then use the other to doppler bark at whatever is knocked over (preferably something that is scary, or has a ranged weapon). Even if one has gone down, or you are only using one, they work very nicely for slams (nice long range on it, and decentish MAT), or taking advantage of anything else that has been slammed. In battle box games, use them to keep the enemy heavy out of action (slam, then bark), or to ramp up the pressure on the enemy lights. For Skorne, use one to keep the titan sitting down, and the other to bark it (if it ends up closer than 4.5" to the slam-gus), or to slam one of the clyclopes. If you get a chance to get Morghoul on his ass, take it, then port Kaya in, and beat him to death. For Legion, again, keep the Carnivean out of play in the same way, but always use the second argus to keep him down, as he's a lot faster than the titan. The wolf should be able to deal with the shredders, if you can make sure he can get to two of them with one charge... Extra armour on him is normally the best choice vs. Legion. Against Trolls, slams are king. Just use your whole army to slam, then port the wolf back to kaya, to get another charge next turn, and hopefully win. Kaya can kill Morghoul or Lylyth in melee, no worries, but Madrak will probably survive, even if she feats. Best use vs. the Trolls is to charge Kaya up to the line, then port the warpwolf into melee with Madrak, and morph for extra strength. Sorry, that turned into a bit of a ramble...! -t.

That was very helpful, thank you. I will have to try that slam+bark trick in my next game. My friend is picking up skorne, and that big titan sure worries me. In my first two games I used the barking to try and slow the enemy down, and used teleport and their good speed to move to the side of their force. I then picked off a beast with the warpwolf (teleport back and bark), and next round when I had numbers sent in everything. Is this what I should be doing?

We're talking Hordes, Theo. 'Tis an awesome game. Seems like you've got the general idea. Kaya is all about yo-yoing, and creating disparity. Once you have an advantage in numbers, it's all good. Always be on the lookout for a quick win (exposed 'lock, no fury, or all beasts full up), and watch out for last minute all-or-nothing shots. Always sucks loosing like that, especially if you'd been totally dominating the table up 'til then. -t.

More work on the argus. Still not sure what color the leather armor parts should be. I don't really like the brown for them as it is now. ![]() The start of the rhino freehand. I can tell already that this is going to be much harder than I first anticipated. Drawing, or even regular painting, is one thing, this is completely another. What took me 20 seconds to sketch (at a comfortable drawing size) took around 15 minutes to block out on the rhino. ![]() Please excuse the shaky camera, some setting changed in it when I replaced the batteries and I can't find out how to switch it back. More to come on that freehanding....oh what next? |
