Hey guys. I've recently started painting up a Tryanid army as my second army, and coming from starting this hobby with the MacCragge set, I decided Tyranids. Most of the guys here have been very good with the critiques and assistance so I thought I'd start up a blog of sorts. Also this will help me keep track of my progress.
I've only started painting since my start date on LO. Jan 2008. I only started collecting about 1-2 months prior to joining an online community, and this has been my home.
Here's what I've got:
1 3rd edition Tyrant
Looking to aquire some Zoanthropes, but just tyring to wait for a good deal, as I have plenty not even removed from the boxes.
Here's the Carnifex
Warriors in progress
Blood Red, Turquoise & Bone inked (black)
I'd appreciate any suggestions. I got some great suggestions earlier for highlighting (Blazing Orange FTW) the red, not sure it shows in the updated pic though.
Also I'm still stuck on highlighting the black. I have attempted mixing my own with white, using codex grey upto white, it just really ended up looking horrible, so I've cleaned them up as solid black still.
Looks good. Rep.
Looks good so far. Waitin' to see some more.
your ds are looking Fantastic so far and I like the way that you magnetised the weopens.
looking forward to updates.

update. I've finished 2 of the warriors, missing 1 of their pix though as I rushed to get the pictures taken and I lost a light, so the pics are slightly dark.
Also Started the old Hive Tyrant. The tryant box was still sealed and I was shocked by what I found in there. The main body, legs, head all metal ( expected ), and a warrior upgrade sprue?!!! It was a light cream color plastic sprue, but it matched exactly size and details to the warrior sprue. I was stunned. I didn't realize they used the same size everything. It was a bit disappointing. Since I have a warrior started with the scything talons and the Venom cannon, That is how I planned on modeling the tyrant, I really didn't want to just have his older brother on the field. However, I got an idea. I used the 'smaller' set of scything talons from the Carnifex I just finished, shaved a bit in the arm for the smaller recess of the tryant's body, and I think its going to work out very well. I also decided to not have him holding both arms up like the police are shaking him down. I got him primed, and both the red and turquoise base coats on.
A bit of a delay, between updates.
Wife surprised me and moved our home office from the garage to our son's old bedroom. So everything was packed and moved when I returns from a business trip, in Boston. Haven't been able to break out the painting again yet. Also the camera that I was shooting with died.
Ordered a mini lighting rig to help with indoor picture taking. Also have an entirely new painting desk to work on, no more taking over the dinning room table. I'll look to get pics and Tyranid updates shortly.
Also ordered a new camera, Canon Xsi 12.2M digital. Anxiously awaiting its arrival. Should produce much better pics than my wifes pocket camera.
Here's some updated pics of my Hive Tyrant. He's far from complete, but he's been inked, highlights both the skin and the carapace.
Using blood red, upto blazing orange fro the skin. And Hawk Turquiose upto to a 60/40 hawk turquiose / skull white mix on the carapace.

I had a thread somewhere regarding highlighting black. I still haven't felt brave enough to try anything drastic on my Tyrant's scything talons. But this is why I was asking. They look very flat. If anyone has any suggestions I'm open. From these pictures you can see what my currently skill level is, as this is the most recent model being painted.
Close up of head carapace detail.
And a slightly dark shot of the Tyrant's torso.
Super nice color scheme, light gray/blue and orangy red, my favourite combo!
It's gonna be pretty cool seeing a table full of them critters.
Any ideas how you're gonna do the base?
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

Well, I've recently restarted my Tyranid Project, with the release of the new codex. I have aquired 3 Zoanthropes, 1 Lictor, 1 Trygon.
I have some pics of the Zoanthropes and the Lictor.
Zoanthropes still need their eyes and teeth, and possibly another final highlight of blazing orange. I'm quite proud of the blending on the stacks, beign colorblind makes any transition really difficult for me.
Lictor needs his eyes done, and possibly a better pic or two.
Currently everything I own, has been built. And is waiting for paint.
The Trygon, is assembled, and primed.
The Hormagaunts have all been properly shaded, but don't have pics of them up yet.
And of course they all need to be based.
I find painting an odd choice of hobby for anyome who is colorblind. That aside, everything looks pretty good. Doesn't look like you have done anything to the bases, tho. even just a touch of flock or gravel can really spruce up a base.
