Default LN's project log

This thread will serve as the log for any sorts of hobby making I get myself caught up in, so any models or fluff or whatnots will be posted (or at least linked to) here.

The inspiration behind creating this thread, of course, is due largely to Tekore taking over the Tale of Painters project. I decided to enter in with an army that nobody in my local gaming group plays - Dark Eldar. Most of my updates for the next few months will be Dark Eldar related, though I'm gifting my Space Marines to my dad (who wants to get into the game) so I will be likely helping him out with some of those models as well, so they will more than likely make an appearance!

At the moment I'm just trying to decide what scheme to go with for my Dark Eldar. I was thinking I could do something simply - drybrush silver armour, black/grey mesh armour, and a snowy base (I love my snowy bases) but that seems too... mechanical. I was also playing with the idea of white armour instead of the silver, but I feel like that's too much white when combined with the snowy bases, which I'm leaning towards keeping.

Thoughts?

You could do something with a very cool blue that highlights up to a white, Then if you do snowy bases wth dark greys underneath it could tie in nicely as looking camoflauged but still different.

Colour schemes aside, do you have any ideas for force organisation? I think a wych based list would work nicely with my suggested scheme as you also have the skin to break up the white.

I look forward to seeing how the army turns out. I need to set me up a thread like this.

The biggest issue with a Wych list (or a Wych Cult, even) is that the models are just... eh. I'm sure one or two squads of them would look okay, with some decent painting and minor conversions, but I don't really have the funds or time (as a full time uni student, starting classes back up this month) to fully convert an entire force, so I'll be going very Warrior heavy, I feel.

Warriors, Reavers, some Wyches, maybe a squad of Incubi, and plenty of transports...

Mostly I'm just winging it, though. Every ToP I've attempted thus far (which has been every single one) I've planned out my army well in advance, and I've never finished it (or even more than 1-2 months). This time, I'm just going to play it by ear. I have 20 Warriors sitting on sprues; my first entry is going to be a squad of Warriors.

After that, I'll probably buy the battleforce (best bang for your buck, honestly) and do a squad of Reavers and a Raider squad for my next two months.

I also have plans for a neat Dracon conversion (one of the few heavy conversions I'm planning for the list), a Dracon with Punisher on a Skyboard, looking all Green Goblin like. Might be a Dracite instead of a Dracon, but one or the other, I'll have them on a Skyboard!

My aim is to have fun and build up my force; I'll worry about the actual list at a later date, I think.

I learned today that white is a huge bummer to paint. Maybe it was just me, but I don't think I'd ever try any army that had white as a major color.

What about a dark red or purple as the armour color? Or maybe a brighter color like yellow or green that you wash down heavily to make it look grimy and dirty?

I totally support winging a ToP. All three of the armies I've done started out with a loose idea that solidified over a few months. Defiantly start painting what you want and then later turn it into an army.

Looking forward to seeing what pops up in here.

Sounds like a great plan, thouh it would have to be a dracon due to having to take a wych list with a drachite.

I feel your pain with the whole uni student=lack of funds, been there done that!

If you can get hold of scaly green/an equivalent then that whites up really nicely and looks great on DE.

Well, I was planning on fielding two HQs anyway; since I'll have between 2000 and 2400 points (assuming I don't have to play a joker at any point), I was planning on grabbing an Archon anyway as my main (real) HQ. The Dracon/Dracite on Skyboard is more for fluff and coolness than anything, though I fully intend on using it during some games.

Thanks for the colour advice, I might give some of those a whirl, I have about five extra DE warriors for this month (I have 20 in all, going to be using 15-16 in my squad for the month) so I have a couple test models to practice on.

The best DE i've seen have been red and black, with the red at the fringes of their armouur slowly darkening until it gets black, it looked pretty BAMF.

Anyhow good luck with ToP, I know for a fact your models will be infinately better than my own, (I happen to be right handed with two left hands ).

I agree. This would suit the eldar pretty well. I have found this link Doghouse's DEldar and then MrChaos' DEldar. The latter uses the daemonette minis for conversions of wyches, they look good - minus the hair of course.
