Dawi of Karaz AnkorThe warriors of the everlasting realm, dwarfs are my first and main army, and Im going to a size of about 1500 - 2000 pts with it. Ill keep track of what Ive painted in this thread and see what other people think and if they have any suggestions. Your own impression of something you've painted yourself is often more positive than that of everyone else. Bit of perspective,, how far gone in my own little world am I? :- )
It's no 'best painted army' I'm trying to make but I do want to field a better then tabletop army in the end.Warriors and thunderersFirst off my warriors and thunderers. All of these are from the battle for skull pass box, I bought some extra warriors from someone who had the set too so I'd have a fully ranked up unit of 20 ( and still 4 left unpainted ) . They are given the basic paintjob of my army, though I guess I do spend some more time on everything in my amy. All surfaces are highlighted, not just one or two layers quik-quik ( I guess I should've used our better camera ) and most models have the eyes painted. No doubt will I touch them up in the future and do all the axe shafts. These two units usually form the backbone of my army along with a unit of longbeards.10 thunderers and 20 warriors with shields
Quarrelers and more warriorsThese warriors were the first dwarfs ( my first fantasy models for that matter ) I bought and I usually usethem as longbeards and the skullpass dwarfs as the normal warriors, though Im now building a longbeardunit. The quarrelers are so called 'empire rangers', dwarfs who live and work in the empire, as there arelots of references in many books of dwarfs in the empire. I used the thunderer regiment kit andmixed the parts with a state troops box and other bits I managed to get a hold on. There is an orcskull on a ring chain on the back of the banner.10 quarrelers and 15 warriors with shieldsSome work in progressI still have a lot of stuff to finish, including a new regiment I just bought of 15 longbeards and another
10 'empire rangers'.the longbeards:
Because they are the old veterans among the warriors I wanted their armour torepresent theirstatus as much as their beards do. So they have helmets wwith cool ornaments on them like small hammers with wings on them ( I got those from thundererbanners ) or spikes and such, and I also cut and filed the little symbols off the shields to make room for freehand runes
I will use these mostly as warriors with great weapons and the ranger upgrade. If I manage to give the crossbows ( they have them on their backs and such and the last 2 models will carry xbows ) enough of a presence in the unit not to make it confusing, then I can use them as quarrelers too.
big guns and giant crossbows, that's the stuff. Here's my artillery. The organgun isnt completely finished, the base is based on the artwork on the front of the cannon/organgun box, artillery safely entrenched behind rocks and sand , with some sticks with heads on them.
The bolt thrower is NMM, I've done a lot of NMM with LotR models and when I used metallic paint the bolt thrower was so boring, so I tried NMM and the result is worth all of the time it took to paint it. Just need to do some little things before it's done.
A Dwarf cannon, Organgun and bolt thrower
The thane isn't finished yet and he's just the simple plastic fellow from skull pass. I didnt put a lot of effort into him, ( I'm gonna get myself on of those metal lords, propably one of those 3 who are leaning on the great weapons with their beards flowing all around or one of the 2 pointing their weapon forward, all dwarf lord/thane models are great anyway ) , more into the runesmith and I painted him NMM. On his staff I went nuts with some washes to get this kind of glow from magic flowing in and around it and it worked out well in the end. I'm proud of that model :- )
Lords of legend
So I'm gonna work on the longbeards and rangers next and after that I'm going to build a unit of either hammerers or ironbreakers, I've only used ironbreakers once or twice before and hammerers never so Ill try to field them to see which one I liked using. I guess ironbreakers against elfs of all descriptions, skaven etc. and Hammerers against orcs, chaos and such. I'll let you know
So let me know what you think of the army
very nice models. I especially love the bolt thrower. I'm an O&G player myself and my main opponent consistently breaks the back of everything i ever throw at him with his 2 units of 20 ironbreakers, i can heartily recommend them (unless we ever meet for a game ... then they suck dont use them )
nice work this is already more painted than my usual dwark opponent
Try using a doomdiver against those Ironbreakers , they are awesome and incredibly cheap. They are stonethrowers that can direct their template D3 to where they want and all they need is for the template to touch a unit, then it causes D6 str 5 wounds, no armoursaves allowed, great against armoured stuff. I can only imagine a doomdiver landing on a unit imperial knights or dark elf cold one knights Elfs smashed to a pulp brightens the day of every honest dwarf player!
You win on two things here. 1. DWARFS!! 2. Great painting. We don't really get many dwarf armies here, and this has made my da...nigh...morning. They are well painted, in a great scheme - its bright and bold. But the icing on the case for me is the freehand. It looks great. The white contrasts with the blue beautifully and well painted freehand. I'd love the see a good view of the Longbeard's veteran.
In fact, only one thing brings this army down for me. The use of those £$%&* masks on warriors to represent Longbeards. I cannot stand that idea. A mask does not make a Longbeard. A Long Beard does! And they don't have one! *grumbles* Otherwise, great work.
Damnit! You're making me want to go fetch my bearded ones out now. They do need repainting... *notches up another project for the future*
To get such comments from one of our most honoured Dwarf kings brightens my day I gave the longbeards masks to represent their higher status and better armour ( the same armour as warriors but let's ignore that fact ) along with those ornaments on their helmets. Glad you like the freehands, the one on the shield of the veteran is based on the artwork in the dwarf book on the page 51 ( page with hero choices )
I'm gonna get myself a couple of these, cool ornaments for the helmets and I don't have to cut the symbols off the shields anymore like I have to do with the warriors regiment box.
Wow i love your dwarfs. I'm collecting dwarfs at the moment and i've entered into the tale of painters to get them done. I especially love your colour scheme.
I mail ordered ths fella today I'm gonna be painting him in the colours of my army, of course, and i'll paint the cloak catachan green, so he'll stand out in a unit.
I also mail ordered some of those shields
O, and I finished my unit of 20 warriors today, I painted the last guy ( on the picture in the first post he's still black, standing in the back ) and did all the bases I still had to do. Finally I got a full sized unit finished
Hey, nice painting! A guy called "the beared one" should definitely have a kick butt dwarf army, and it appears that you do. Love the pictures!
LO's copy and paste pictures is awesome, saves so much time
I was considering this one. It would've been either this one or the one I've mail-ordered, but in the end I went for the pistol and eyepatch, he has more clothing to paint, I don't like doing mostly metal ( when I get ironbreakers thats gonna be a thrilling adventure of drybrushing and washing ) and the other one has a cloak and more clothing to paint, but I'm pretty certain I'll be buying this one in the future, he has so much character!
I've seen you dwarf gallery by the way, kuffy, and I think they look great! We've used a similar painting scheme by the way, blue and khaki
Here are my 20 warriors based and painted, i'll add them to my first post too. I've also worked on the longbeards:
And here a good look at the shield of the longbeard veteran for King Ulrik
