Welcome to jaNDo's Tale of Painters 2009-2010 thread! This season I will be aiming to complete my first (and only) 2,000 point Warhammer 40k army - and I've chosen the best list of all: Imperial Guard!
This post will be my index page and will link to all of my progress updates so that people can, at a glance, see the amount of progress I've made over the course of the year. I'm aiming to win the most improved painter title since the others seem out of my grasp.

what am I, the pope?
i'm may have a chance in this category too.... whats why my current models are so awful /cough honest
My main problem with Warhammer 40k is that I can never seem to decide on a single army! In the last two years I've started Grey Knights, Tau, Crimson Fist, Imperial Guard and Imperial Fist armies - and never gotten anywhere with any of them!
Deciding to stick with one army has been very difficult but it is something that I must force myself to do. With the release of the latest Imperial Guard codex I think that I can focus solely on the Hammer of the Emperor without the decision eating away at me too badly!
I had begun to collect an Imperial Guard army about 18 months ago, but had only managed to paint 20 men. Here they are for all to see:
Not pictured: Two men on 25mm bases with Missile Launchers
When I picked up these guardsmen again a few weeks ago, two things bothered me:
- The colour scheme
- The units are no longer legal (sergeant w/ lasgun, missile launcher on own base)
The colour scheme just looked... too parade-gound, rather than some serious, grim fighting force towing the line between oblivion and salvation. I was inspired by BTP's Lions Rampant and thepete's incredible army ([Tale of Painters] Imperial Guard with Grey Knight Allies) from the last Tale of Painters.
So the scheme I've come up with is here:
Infantry Squad Sergeant
I've chosen this scheme because it's quick and easy to paint and quite striking (in my opinion). The right shoulder will be black for every man in the army, while the left will denote the guardsman's status (red for rank-and-file, blue for veterans... airborne will be different again).
My plan for the first month is as follows:
- Scout Sentinel (Autocannon + Hunter-Killer missile) - 50 points
- Heavy Weapons Squad (Heavy Bolters & Autocannons painted) - 75 points
- Company Command Squad (Autocannon, 2x Grenade Launcher, Senior Officer) - 70 points
Wish me luck, because I'm going to need it!

You've got the "most improved painter" idea all wrong... if you start with "really cool" where do you go from here?
Great work! Anybody who's crazy enough to do Guardsmen is cool with me! Subscribed!
