Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all. So every now and then, I'll get sick of working on my current project, and want to try something completely different. This is the reason why I have no fewer than 5 incomplete 'armys' (I say that because only one consists of enough points to actually use for gaming), and it's also the reason why I have an Orks codex and battleforce headed my way.
Now I've always wanted to to a heavily themed or converted army, and it occurs to me that Orks would be perfect. So, my main goals in getting started with Orks is to a) Convert every model at least a little bit, b) Have an easily recognizable but somewhat unique theme, and c) Actually get them finished (the whole battleforce assembled and painted to my satisfaction).
So I am currently trying to decide on a theme. I've had a bit of a look online for some inspiration, and come up with a few cool ideas which I'll list below, but I wonder if anyone has any ideas that would fit the bill? Comments and suggestions welcome.
My ideas so for:
Tribal; Lots of warpaint, furs/skins, big tusks etc.
Cybork; Robotic limbs, high tech targeting visors etc.
Arctic Orks; Eskimo coats/hoods, snowmobiles, goggles.
So I need to expand on, mull over, then refine the above list. Any ideas for themes, and how it could be done conversion wise would be great.
Edit: I don't know why I made the thread title a question... o.O

I like all of your ideas- the Tribal is one I considered, doing a snakebite army and using WHFB orcs for the boyz, boarboys for bikerz, and buying some Forgeworld Squiggoths etc. but I discounted it as it would have ended up fairly expensive (due to my inability to limit spending on something like that!)
For the cyborks you could use parts from other manufacturors- such as Warmachine warjacks- also Pig Iron productions do similar models at an appropriate scale you could scavenge- would be a really fun modelling project.
My favourite idea of your, however, would be the Arctic orks- snowmobiles, Orks on skiis and snowboards- maybe get one of the aforementioned squiggoths as some sort of mammoth- and/or use the Ogre Yeti models for some purpose. It would also fit your brief as every model would require an element of conversion and it would be a really strong visual theme.
I also had an idea (that got no further than the drawing board) for naval orks- have the boyz wearing those little naval caps and wearing naval whites- and convert a battlewagon into a big steam-punkesque landship bristling with guns and with grot riggers running all over it. Might be a bit too out there but you could have a lot of fun with it.

Cyborks would probably be the toughest and most rewarding of the three themes. It would also fit easily into any battlefield you happen to be fighting on. So Cyborks get my vote.
Whichever theme you go with remember not to get too carried away. Orks are fun but they are also war hungry barbarians. In addition to whatever theme you go with, your army still needs to look fierce and filled with greenskins who take pleasure in ripping limbs off/setting things on fire. A lot of people get too crazy with their ork themes and they end up having a complete joke for an army. An ork football (Green Bay Packers) theme i've heard about comes to mind. The "Joke" ork armies are fun for a little bit, but then get old pretty fast.
What is dis signature nonsence?! dem stupid human zoggers are always trien to confuze us.
Yeah, I completely agree. I've heard a lot of Ork themes that just make me wince. The first priority of any Ork should be killin' humies (followed closely by every other non-greenskin race, followed closely by smaller greenskins).

Couple themes i can come up with off the top of my head is
Cave orks-pick axes, drills, helmets with light on them, real dark skin(objectives coal, gold)
Night stalkers- lots of swords, ninja stars, black cloths
Mutated orks- orks on a chemically inbalanced world- more then 2 arms, bigger(basicly a little chaosy)
Hoped i gave you some ideas
Could always mix themes. Make a SM Ork army.As in orks wearing space marine shoulder pads, using bolters as Shootas. Get really mean with it and paint all the gear a certain chapter. Pretty much an entire army of lootas. Gotta admit I'm interested in the Cybork idea.
