I am planning my own renengade chapter of Space Marines, and thought that before I started making the models that I would post some fluff I have written and take some ideas from the LO community.
I have already made the decision to use Scythes to represent Power Fists on my models but other than that I am open to ideas from the LO community.
Basis of fluff is taken from Codexpace Marines, Codex: Eldar and Codex: Grey Knights.
(as a side note, I am tempted to do some Eldar to link in with the fluff I have written)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------‘Death Whispers’ Renegade Invaders Chapter
The First Call of Chaos
The taint and corruption of the Invaders chapter of Space Marines began back in 852.M41 in the final days of the destruction of the Idharae craftworld by the reckless and relentless Invaders; The time when Ynaeed took note.
In the final days of the assault the Invaders had backed the Eldar into the last bio-dome on the craftworld. When the Invaders finally made their assault into the bio-dome there were but a handful of guardians, warlocks and a single farseer. The Eldar fought bravely but the might of the Invaders chapter was not to be stopped, in the final moments of life of the Idharae craftworld the Captain of the 2nd Company, Thanatos fought with the Farseer, as blades crossed the Farseer warned the Captain of the terrible fate awaiting the Invaders, “Mon-Keigh you do not realise the error of your ways, you have brought death upon us all!”. Thanatos stubborn as best fitting his chapter, ignored the warning of the Farseer, “It is only your death that will satisfy the Emperor”
“Your cleansing of us only powers the dark lords of Chaos, you will heed their words soon enough, Mon-Keigh”
The captain brought his sword down upon the Farseer, felling him with the final blow, “Ogrys would be proud of our progress today”
“But not as much as I…” said a dark voice from within the Captain’s power armor.
“What heresy is this? Has this xenos being corrupted this area?”
And then there was only silence around the Captain, except for the orders of his brothers of the 2nd Company securing the area around them.
With the area secure and the xenos purged from the bio-dome, the Invaders began the final step of their cleansing, its destruction. Marines from the chapter placed charges around the dome, allowing for the destruction of the dome. With the final charge placed and the timer set, Thanatos ordered the withdrawl and the 2nd company left for the Thunderhawk Gunships outside the dome. As the gunships departed for the fleet orbiting the doomed world, the charges went off and the dome collapsed. “The Cleansing is complete” muttered Thanatos before focusing on his return to the fleet.
The Destruction of Ogrys
After the destruction of Idharae, Thanaton and the remaining marines of Invaders returned to their home planet or Ogrys, the loss of marines in the cleansing of Idharae had taken a greater toll on the Invaders than anyone had guessed. It took 43years for the Eldar to seek out the Invaders and seek their revenge for the cleansing of Idharae. By the time the Eldar of the craftworld Alaitoc attacked there were barely five full companies within the fortess-monastery. The action was swift and brutal by the Alaitoc, whose corsairs were supported by rangers and pathfinders who had identified the weak points of the fortress-monastery. The planet was lost and only three companies were able to escape the retaliation of the ancient xenos, one of those companies being the 2nd.
“You were warned of the wrath that would be upon you…”, Thanaton remembered the voice, the one that had spoken to him nearly 50years earlier, “Who are you? What have you wanted with me and the Chapter?”
“You are to fulfil a greater purpose, one Mon-Keigh that you will become aware of in time…”
The voice had gone and Thanaton thought of it no more…
The Final Stand at The Librarium of Jollana
The Invaders had been called upon to secure and reinforce the Librarium of Jollana, a sacred place to the imperium where knowledge unknown to the galaxy was held. The final three companies of the Invaders and a relief Imperial Guard force acted in their trademarked recklessness, launching a full-scale assault unknown whether there was a legion of foes awaiting them. As the Invaders landed a sorcerous trap left by Ahirman was set in motion as one last act of chaos. When the Invaders landered, they pressed towards the librarium releasing the arcane energies as they entered one of the great halls the trap was sprung, the planet rocked on its axis and the threat was released. The Imperial Guard were consumed by the Warpflame as the taint spilled fourth on Jollana along with taking many of the Invaders, leaving less than a hundred warriors. Many were lost, the only senior captain left being Thanaton…
“You did not here the warnings, and now you will face the wrath of CHAOS” the words echoed through his head as the trap was sprung, Daemons poured through rifts in the warp. The Invaders acted as quickly as their Astartes reflexes would allow, but for some it was not quick enough, Daemonettes and Plague Bearers swarmed the mighty hall. The Invaders took up defensive positions as best they could in the short time they had had to react.
The Invaders defended the Great Hall for many days and with ammunition running low the Astartes were forced back to a small ante-chamber away from the main hall, where they were facing the grim possibility of being destroyed by the terrors of the warp. In the last defiance of the Invaders as their barricades finally fell, without ammo they charged at the Bloodletters and Daemonettes that were beginning to over run their position. At this point, Grey Knights appeared and were able to support the Invaders in slowing the horde of daemons. It took an unkown quantity of time before the daemons slackened and marines stood victorious, only seventy Invaders were left. The grey knights approached the Invaders, “There is still a great taint here and we must remove it, you will assist us in this matter” As the grey knight finished his sentence, ammo supplies were teleported in for the Invaders and Grey Knights to make this final push to remove the taint from Jollana.
As the Invaders and Grey Knights moved towards the Great Hall, they were met by Daemons invigorated by the power of the sorcerous portal located within, Thanaton and his remaing Invaders pushed into the Great Hall, charging into the fray with the Grey Knights. Thanaton and his brothers were slowed and the daemons overwhelmed the Invaders, each slowly falling to the vast numbers of daemons pouring from the rift. Thanaton was taken down by Daemonettes and was fighting for his life against the onslaught, unknown to him that the Grey Knights were closing the rift. The daemons realising the attempts by the Grey Knights to close the portal redirected their rage and anger at the grey knights leaving Thanaton beaten and bloodied in the floor of the great hall, barely conscious.
Thanaton knew the battle was nearing an ending as winds around the Great Hall raged pulling in the Daemons to the rift before the closing of the rift and it shattering into a thousand pieces. Thanaton could see the grey knight near the portal collapse and with that Paladins of the Grey Knights, supported by Apothecaries tended to the wounded Invaders repairing them as best they could to allow them to return to the Invaders fleet ship. “And so it has begun, death should be your call, and you will answer it soon enough”…This was the last voice Thanaton heard before going into a protective stasis provided by his power armor.
The Taint Takes Hold
It took some time for Thanaton to recover consciousness to find that only ten of his battle brothers remained out of the whole chapter. Immobile through injury but aware of surroundings, Thanaton could see the his chambers change from a simple lighted hab to a dark and dreary hole with a single figure of proportions larger than that of an Astartes in the shadows. “I told you that the taint would take hold, and it has begun. You and your final brothers will now work with the dark taint of Chaos, you have lost many brothers to the greater powers of Chaos and the craftworld Eldar. You are now my minions and will do my bidding”
“What do you mean? We are loyal to the Imperium of Man, To The Emperor”
“ I have seen into your souls, the greed and hatred within you has lead you down this path, you must now embrace it and you will be granted power enough to get your revenge”
“I shall do your bidding, but by what name are you known?”
“My name is not important, but you will realise that I am the God of the Dead and you will be my vengeful will, take this weapon and you will be granted the power greater than the Daemons you destroyed in the halls of Jollan.”
Thanaton relaxed and allowed the taint to take hold, I am no longer an Invader, I have been shown the true path through Death’s Whispers”.
Interesting start. If you wish your chapter to become renegades through exposure to daemons, with the assistance of the Grey Knights this would not happen. Due to the nature of the knights, they could cleanse the area and its enhabitants, mindwiping all those involved. The main story is a little confusing/hard to read but otherwise seems reasonably good. Hope that wasnt too harsh or anything and hope it helps
Yeah thats what i kind of thought, but wanted to base it around some actual established fluff and the god of the dead, and as the Invaders chapter were the only ones that seemed stupid enough to do it and then when down to a small handful were sent to stop Ahirman that it seemed kind of fitting.
I know that the Grey Knights would of removed the taint and possibly this is where i need to re-vamp the fluff a bit, as in C:GK it talks about being able to pick up on their signature despite the daemon incursion. I was contemplating going around the aspect of the fluff with that as it is a lesser god of Chaos, specifically found within the Eldar that the Grey Knights did not pick up on it initially because of the massive taint in the library of Jollan.
Possibly allowing the Invaders to escape temporarily, but are now being hunted.
What about Chaos Space Marines rather than daemons? If you were to change this there would be no need to include the Grey Knights as they only usually tend to fight the daemonic. Your legions could then acquire some form of daemonic artifact that could then corrupt the marines.
