Welcome to Librarium Online!
As some of you may have read, I am going to be starting on working on some power armor for next years Dragon Con. Dragon Con for those who do not know is probably the 2nd-3rd sci-fi/fantasy/anime/geek convention in the states. Just doesn't get as much press as Comic Con does. This will be next September as it is every year on the Labor day weekend. So that gives me just shy of a whole year to put this thing together, lose a little weight, find bunk mates, and get a room. So in the next day or so I will be putting up some pictures of the start of this thing. Including what I have purchased so far, a more detailed battle plan than what is going to be down below this, and some pictures.
Any comments or critiques are more than welcome, but please try and be nice as I know most of what I've seen on here is.
I would like to say, as we all know Warhammer is on a heroic scale so nothing can really be done about making thing EXACT, and I'm obviously not 8' feet tall and the size of a car, but I am built kind of like a football player. Now while I do plan on making my self an inch or 2 taller, everything else will be scaled done a little bit but should hopefully still be in proportion to ME. Shoulder guards will be just shy of being to the top of my head as seen on most marine artwork. The power back pack will be almost level, if not a little taller, than my head.
Most of this project is going to be made with foam, fiber glass, bondo, MDF (the oh so loveable pink insulation) and if I deem it light enough self rising resin foam stuff.
So now that the introduction is out of the way. I will tell you know what I currently have and basic planning. I am starting off with football shoulder pads, as they provide much needed bulk and gives a very nice base to build the upper body with. I have found La Cross gloves which will be butchered a little bit, but will be used as...well gloves. I will be "extending" the breast plate with foam padding you might find at home improvement stores, the kind that is thick and comes in interlocking puzzle squares (I found a great tutorial on youtube that shows how this can me heated and bent to fit the shape you want) this will be shaped around me to provide a full suit, this will most likely be done on the legs and arms and then fiber glassed over. I will be going bare headed so I will be shaving my head ALMOST bald when it gets closer to the CON.
If anyone has any ideas as to what chapter please let me know. I will be going as loyalist as chaos armor would be much bigger and lots of extra that frankly I don't think will be suitable in a con setting. Also I will not be going as Ultramarines, or Black Templars. Just personal preferences.
Appreciate that post Munch, I actually shot him and email, seeing as both me and this other guy live in the same state, and probably no more than an hour and a half away from each other.
Im really looking forward to seeing this project come to life! Sorry i cant give any advice, its not really my area of expertise.
Sometimes the best defense is a good offense... Wait, what?
Here is the basics of what I currently have. I am obviously going to be using a bit more foam than what I have a picture of.
As of right now I am working on the form for the 2 shoulder guards. I will be making one form, and one mold and cast that twice. Then fill it with foam.
This is the beginning of the shoulder guards, what I think is the most iconic thing about Space Marines. I am obviously not finished but once all the foam is in place I will then be stripping it down and bondo-ing it. This is only a form for my mold so weight isn't really a factor on this piece, as long as I can lift it. Once this is done I am going to, as I've said previously, make 2 cast out of it.
Questions, comments, or concerns are welcome
So it looks like this thread rolled it reanimation protocol roll, and stood back up. Just wanted to post an update (no pictures tonight) I have scrapped the project and started over, and almost have the shoulder guard ready for bondo. Hopefully tomorrow afternoon.
Good to see it's still going! I think I'd flagged this as one to watch knowing I probably couldn't contribute anything useful, aside from encouragement perhaps!
I would love to see the progress! perhaps I might have wanted to make myself a power armour if I weren't so slim
