Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've always been interested in the Raptors (or Raptor Legion as they are sometimes known). They are an old (second founding), Rogue Trader-era, chapter of Marines. Fluff on them is rare, but that which is available is intriguing. The Raptors were basically en route to a battle zone, when their battle barge was shot down. A large portion of the chapter ended up stranded on a deathworld called Jemdal - a vicious alien jungle planet, where even atmopshere was toxic and humans found it almost impossible to breathe.
The Marines were hunted through the alien jungles by an ork warband. They were forced to adapt or die: modifying their armour with "osmotic gills" and repainting it green in order to use stealth to their advantage. The cadre of stranded Marines did survive, and were eventually picked-up by some Ultramarines.
That's a potted history of the Raptors. There are few sources of data available on them, but I've tried to stay faithful so far as possible.
So, I decided that I wanted to build a Raptor Legion army. Basically about 1500 points worth, a decent spread of unit-types and vehicles, which would be reasonably effective whilst reflecting the fluff.
My army list has been sketched out, and I will post it later.
On to the models. I have, so far, about 8 tactical marines painted together with a razorback.
These guys are very much work in progress right now. I have, since the images were taken, added tactical markings to the shoulder pads. (As an aside, the GW decals are awful: they are veyr crinkly even with MicroSol and the colours are so thin I've had to go back over them with red paint.) Squad numbers will be added asap, and in due course I'll also think about how to paint/get decals for the Raptor shoulder badge.
I will post my army list soon, and hope to slowly update this thread with my progress - comments appreciated!
Very interesting mate.
Nice painting. Nice fluff. Good luck

Finished two tactical squads now...
Here's a close-up of the decals I used:
Then Brother Arkansas, the only dreadnought in my army...
Also, my finished Razorback...
That's it so far, all waiting to be varnished.
Would appreciate any comments, feedback or words of encouragement - I've noticed I'm not getting many hits!!! Oh well, hopefully I'll keep up the enthusiasm to finish this project anyway.
The models look realy good and i have read the Raptor´s Fluff and it was quite nice.
*thumbs up* and keep them coming

Zut alors man, I really like that paint job! I'm also curious, how do you get that texture?
Looks great from my end Cheers

Send me a hello if you remember me.
Nice paint job. Weren't the Raptors a Raven Guard successor chapter? I'm pretty sure they were (check Wiki for the list of SM chapters, it says on there)... I'd like to see some Assault Squads in your army.
I like the scheme, the only gripe I have is that.. well, they're on a jungle deathworld. I notice some of the paint chipping, and that's nice and all, but I'd definitely like to see some actual battle damage. There's no way their power armour and the likes would be completely clean and scratch-free, etc. It'd be nice to see some variation, too... some scratches, some huge gashes, some melted/fused parts (acidic rain or something?), etc. I'd just like to see them with the "stranded on a jungle deathworld" feel.
Overall, though, definitely a nice job. Keep it up!
That Dread is bitchin', as is the rest of the army (the Dread is my favorite, though). I do, however, have to agree with Nemesis... Give us some more really beaten-up, I-live-on-a-deathworld, rough and tumble stuff. Big gashes, holes, melting... I'd be nice for them to really look like they've been to Hell, smacked the Devil in the mouth, and come back to tell about it.
Here are some I'd thought about for that "deathworld veteran" feeling:
1. Osmotic gills - these were one of the variations that the Raptors made to their power armour on Jemdal. They include additional piping and cables from the vox-grille. I'm working on them at the moment with limited success...!
2. Veteran squad with camo cloaks - again, a very much WIP idea, but to have power armour Marines with cloaks like the scout snipers.
3. Veterans/command squad with semi-power armour - a sort of not-very-40k-idea, but I'm experimenting with taking Catachan arms and mounting bolters on them; the idea being that you can move more quietly in half-power armour than the full suit. Some might not like this idea, but it would certainly make for an original army
4. Scout snipers with helmeted/cloaked heads - just a little variation I had in mind.
As for battle damage, again hopefully a veteran or command squad will address that concern. I think that it would really add character to an army though.
Also thinking of bizarre vehcle upgrades to overcome an alien jungle - other forums have thrown up the ideas of anti-plant launchers, chainsaw 'dozers, double 'dozer blades, etc.
Thanks for all of your comments! I really appreciate the feedback, and it really helps with the development of the army. I have a biker Marine finished now, and just built up two more Marines and the Chapter Master! The latter was fantastic to build, and he's almost finished by bitz box.
I'll post the biker soon - he is completed but thinking about adding some weathering and other damage to the vehicle and rider.
As for dozer blades, just make it extra large and long to wrap around the frontal portion of the sides to seem like they just shove everything out of the way. I had a similar idea, just not as converted as I do not have the time on my hands. Good job and keep up the good work.
