Thread: Godzilla Tyranid Army

No, this was not done with a dip technique. I took the much longer (and less effective) route of painted the carapace bleached bone, washing it with chestnut ink, and then highlighting again with bleached bone. Recently I have grown to like the Ogryn Skin wash, one of the new ones, because it automatically does nice highlights that I just need to emphasize.
Applaud, my friend, the Comedy is finished.

why do you post on a two year old thread anyways? its completely unneccesary anyways >=(

Well, that was rude. The reason I posted here is because I saw some one who obviously knows how to paint and I wanted his opinion, along with anyone else's. Also, the thread had a post as recently as March 28th prior to my posting. So, thanks for your input.

Actually, had he not revived this thread, I wouldn't have seen it. I hadn't heard of dipping before, and now my previously primed-only gaunts will be getting a table-top worthy paintjob without spending 2-3 hours per 8.

I've been looking for a method similar to this. I'm just starting my army so I'm totally new to painting and everything. I'm wanting to use a similar tan color to Aero's for th3e exoskeleton and use an orange color for the carapace etc. Will that shade of wax bring out the orange as well as it did for the red? Also how hard is it to get the excess wax off with a brush?

    ???

I'm finding it difficult to find a good wood stain, so I wonder in just a normal ogryn flesh wash would work as an alright substitute?

From what I've noticed, though I'm no expert, a good amount of ogryn works very well on bleached bone. I was gonna post my tyrant in a little to show how it looks when done with ogryn flesh wash.

Similiar to mine too. I prime Rustoleum High Heat Almond, paint the carapaces Mechrite Red, and then wash with Liquitex Raw Umber.

The Antique Walnut should look wonderful -- the darker colors of the Minwax Polyshades all work very well for this technique.

The "wax" is actually a stain and clear poly paint mixture. It must be thinned (a little) with mineral spirits, which also is your clean-up fluid for the brushes. The clean up is easy, but I would dedicate an old brush to it, just to be safe.

Finding Minwax Polyshades is much easier than finding Ogryn Flesh... IF you live in the US or Canada...

Yes, ogryn flesh will work, but the overall look is different and dirtier.

The product I use is an " all in one, polyurethane woodstain and finish " (It is not just a woodstain) If you were to go to any DIY store that has housepaint, wood finishing supplies and the like, just ask for an "all in one, polyurethane woodstain and finish", pick the darkest color (except for black) and Bob's your uncle!

(Remember to pick up some mineral spirits while you are there!)

    Hope this helps

I definately agree. Personally, this is why I like it. 'Nids are basically giant bugs, so I imagine that all of the blood, grime, and gore would make their carapace very dirty.
