ok im so totally confused about this subject...what is a campaign exactly? is it a story line or some sort of clan or maybe a guild? And if it is a story-line of some sort is it ok if you make dungeons along the way and just kinda wing it. so there are like different story lines in the same town. me and 2 other people are doing a thing where we switch DM every week and we some how make the dungeon fit into teh story...but we still use the same towns and shops etc. O and if you go to sell stuff is it ok to have the DM like be the shopkeep and they like negotiate a price and stuff...and we also thought it was a good idea not to give out too much gold because if you get a ***** load of gold after like the first dungeon its no fun...me and my other friends give out like copper and stuff and its kinda hard to get gold. So thanks for posting if you do!

OK. Lets see.
A campaign can be various things to various people. It is, loosely, a series of linked sessions of play using the same characters (or at least only getting a new one if one dies). A storyline usally develops as one session is rarely enough to finsih a story line and one storyline tends to blend into the next.
What you are doing sounds like the begginings of a campaign, although it is usually best for one DM to control the flow for several sessions say 5-10 as this allows a real story to develop without any players having background details. Then the person who takes over can move the game in a different direction so that the old DM doesn't know whats going on. 5-10 seessions is usually better that <5 because too many changes in story direction just lead to a confused mess.
Limiting gold to a reasonable amount per adventure is sensible, although if the PC's find a way to make more gold try to take that into account. Also PC's with say 50 GP betwen a group of 4 are VERY rich in a small town or village in most places so it is also a good idea to make sure the town inhabitants treat tham appropriately, also if they are going into the same town it iwll make the game cohesivee if they regularly meet the same NPC's, whcih it sounds like your doing.
And campaigns oftentimes lasts for YEARS. That is simply ONE campaign; your same characters could very well go on a different campaign right after, for another 3 years.
