Welcome to Librarium Online!
I never played card games much, I've always been a bigger fan of the table top variety games.
But recently, with people always busy and on the move, it's a lot more difficult to organize a game of 40k than to say throw down a quick card game. So ==My== brothers and I have decided to pick up a CCG for funsies when we can't play with our dollies.
I played Pokemon back when it first came out (good times) and ==My== brother played Yu-Gi-Oh for a while when it was new, but that's about it.
We're looking for a game that can appeal to all ages (10-21 is our range), is easy to pick up but has potential to be very deep and challenging.
The only games I really know of are WoW, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon. We have no interest in WoW or Warcraft in general, so that's out.
So, what are everyone's thoughts on those 3 games? Which would you recommend for relative newbies to CCG looking for a fun and challenging game? Which is the cheapest? How would we start? Any other card games worth mentioning?
As of now I'm leaning towards MTG for its rep, but I'm no expert on this.
Thanks for any insights.

MTG keeps on taking out older sets of cards, so to play competitively you have to constantly buy new cards, the same with pokemon. If just playing in a friendly setting, then this doesn't matter as much.
YGO - This is a pretty good card game, for all ages. The problem is that you'll be spending a lot of money ($1000 for the best deck of cards.) even for craptastic themed decks, just to get the right cards. I have literally spent over $200 for a tier 2 Dragon lockdown, and it's not even fully finished yet. That and literal 2 Turn win decks. There will still be little kiddies playing it, with crappy decks in tournies...
Currently, I'd say to go ahead and find another forum that's based on cardgames, because this one is so slow, scientists have declared it extinct.
Create flames for a galaxy and it will be warm. Put a galaxy in flames and it will be warm for the rest of it's existence.
depends on how comfortable you feel playing yugi oh or pokeman at age 21
i'd recommend magic because cards are constantly being released and they still work just fine with old cards, the deck just wont be legal for tournament play(which for friendly games wont matter!)
but i also havent played pokemon since it was released way back when and i've never played yugi oh or WoW.
also to comment on pricing: you can buy "standard"(meaning current set and tournament legal, the current set is magic2010 ) 60 card decks for magic for only 12 bucks. they're usually really well built decks and the price is right. they call them "intro packs" and it will say 60 card preconstructed deck and they usually include a booster in the box too.

You might want to look into UFS (Universal Fighting System) if you're not intrested in those other CCGs. It's slightly trickier to get used to, but that's not really a problem if you can find someone who can teach you, which shouldn't be too hard unless you're outside the US/UK. Anyway, it's definitely fun and challenging once you're into it, and rotation comes once a year, with sets lasting 2 years.
It also has "the greatest prize in gaming"
TAU PLAYER - GREY KNIGHTS PLAYER - WOOD ELVES PLAYER (kind of)
