Have you ever given your character a feat, language or something else that didn't make much sence in game terms, but made a lot of sence for the character?
For instance I once gave a druid an animal companion thay was a hawk, and she had a whole story connected with the hawk. But in gaming sence the wolf would have fitted better since it was a very intense fighting campaign.
I also had a rogue with points in performing, because it made sence since he was a gypsy. It didn't really help in general since perform isn't a class skill (as far as I remeber from the top of my head) But it was damn nice with the character.
The same guy also had a goat along with him for an entire campaign. It was a wierd goat though. It wasn't scared of anything, and sometimes the group would find it in the middle of smoking ruins completey unscathed...
But back to the point, have you ever done something like that? I personally find it a lot of fun, and the character also becomes more realistic. Also when I look at feats for third level, i always chose something that fits with what the group has been doing. For example, I wouldn't choose "Investigator" If all we had been doing was to run around killing at first sight... Any comments or stories?

I've never played D&D so no, but I have done in Werewolf.
It makes it more interesting, that your playing a person rather and a uber fighting machine that may or may not be realistic.

I recall playing a heavily scarred, one-armed gunslinger in Deadlands for a while before he ultimately got snuffed. The loss of limb and the scars were from a mortor round that exploded near him during the civil war. Figured that since the Marshal gave me the Stitchin' ability as his supernatural boon after I drew my deck of cards for stats, I might as well play it up a notch and just play a guy that keeps stomping forward until he can't move anymore.
He never could handle anything other then a double-action revolver or a rifle quickly. Never could use blackpowder weaponry, had a horrible time lighting dynamite, riding a horse, or reloading his weapons, and of course the only way he could **** the rifle was by spinning the long arm a la True Grit. All he was was a normal human fighting along side hucksters, mad scientists, and worse. An absolute joy to play, really. If I recall right, he sacrificed himself for the group by grabbing a bundle of dynomite and launching himself at an Abomination after being slashed through the gut.
Seriously maiming my characters seem to be a theme with me. I had a ravnos that was torn apart by a gangrel as a ghoul, so he walked around with a scarred face and only one eye (he kept a collection of glass eyeballs though). A more recent character for WoD2.0 is a Nosferatu that's a 'Nam vet and is missing his arm (he also causes anyone who stays around him for too long to start experiencing the same shell-shock that he suffered while he was alive. WHOOMP WHOOMP WHOOMP, here come the Hueys...). I also played a thinblooded caitiff for a while. That was another absolute joy.
My Half-ork bard is another particular favorite. Impossible to play right unless it's with an actual TT group. He might be gruff and off-setting to those that don't know him, but the troupe he travels with (including a dwarf ranger and an elf barbarian of all things, as well as a gnome druid) would take him, his leather clothing, and his war-drums over any pansy human bard in poofy clothes armed with a lute.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of that, especially with profession, craft and knowledge skills, they're very good for adding more to your character's history and background. I try not to be influenced by what I know will be handy for selectiing abilities and skills, just what fits in with the character best has always been the way I've built my characters.
Like a streetwise thug type of fighter / rogue I once made had:
Profession - thug
Profession - gambling
Craft - weighted dice...
You get the idea where this is going! Very fun to play with indeed!

My anti-paladin started his career with a severe light-sensativity flaw that made him -2 to strength and constitution in full daylight even though he was human! (That was the price of his 18/72 str and 18 con in full darkness! Not that 16's in both categories are anything to scoff at!)
It was an unliftable curse that was placed on him a couple of months after his birth by his own mother while she was burning at the stake for the attempted murder of the baby because she was psychic and knew what evil she had given birth too!
The first few levels were extremely difficult to play, but after he got his suit of custom made full plate armor that allowed no sunlight to affect him (at about 8th or 10th level) he really became a powerful bastard!
Until one adventure the armor was disintegrated during a pitched battle in full daylight!! Then he had a continual light spell cast in his eyes! Doh! :eek:
His army lost that battle and he barely escaped with his life!
Due to his infamy it took 2 years of wearing inadequite full plate armor before he found a smith skilled enough (and remotely removed enough from news of his evil deeds!) to fashion another replacement suit of armor!
He was the only character I played with a flaw, but it was such a severe one that I really didn't want anymore 'challenged' characters.

I played a monk with an int of 4 once.. that was actually a lot of fun, basically think a brain-damaged zealot of bacchus...
I played a NG High Elven fighter who had larceny in his heart.
The other players would give me their copper/ silver/ gold to convert into platinum, and I would do so---- after skimming off an extra share for myself (10-20%, depending on how I was feeling). No one ever caught him. The Dungeon Master was all set for the fallout: after all, he knew what I was doing, but bless him he never gave me away.

We all know how dwarves and elves don't get along, right? We had this campaign where each PC had two characters, and I played an elven ranger and a dwarven Cleric of Moradin. The dwarf would argue with any elven PC that angered him, most often my elven ranger. There would be times during the campaign where I was arguing with myself, and it really made everyone else laugh seeing my "monologue." :p
That same ranger had Mounted Combat as a feat, even if it is better for a paladin. My ranger really loved his heavy warhorse, and often rode atop him in combat. He was a sword fanatic, so he also had a Longsword of Fire and a Longsword of Ice. He didn't have a ranged weapon, but that was because he liked to see his favored enemies (orcs for example) die instead of turning them into pincushions and seeing them flee to fight another day.
I like fluffy characters (if I may use the term "fluffy") more than min-maxed character. Makes for a more interesting campaign.
during a campaign i was dming one of my players decided to play a blind hero if i would give allow him to get bonuses to hearing in exchange. he ended up playing the character really well and i will always remember his endeavours fondly...right up to the moment where he sacrificed his soul for the good of all...
Well I allways gives my characters something unique often some skills with don't make any sense at all or simple give them an affection for special items, I once played a human rogue, who pretty oftens kills his victim with a statue of the healing Goddess, it is a long story why he did so but he did, I've also played a human who couldn't speak common but Giant instead because he was allmost raised be a minotaur fighting in a gladiator arena
