I don't know how may people have played World of Darkness, but the new system is really sucky.
It adds and subtracts dice to your roll insted of increasing the difficulty.
The weapon rolls are the damage and the skill rolled into one? What the hell is that supposed to reflect?
Are they trying to say and expert marksman with a pengun could kill an average marksman with a machine gun alot easier?
Bah, new systems are always worse, D&D excluded, Star wars going from d6 to d20 definitely included.
I found that playing Werewolf in the new system rules.
Mage I am starting soon. But having read the WoD rulebook, werewolf and mage, i think that the system is a LOT faster, smoother and on the whole, works well.
For old school WoD fans, of course there will be some time ajusting to the change.
I haven't played the new Werewolf yet, but I guess the system is not all bad, it does make the combat go alot quicker, but for other things like knowledge rolls, I find it just makes it harder, rather than easier (because of the increased difficuty).
Personally I think both the old and new system had their merits.
The new system is more balanced when it comes to combat, etc. and vampiric disciplines. I also think the new health system is far better than the soak system in my opinion. I think it's a better reflection of what increased stamina would do.
I think both systems were interesting.. but they're very different.
I'll agree I greatly prefer the old rules system though. The new one is a bit strange, but I won't deny it is faster and more streamlined. As I said, advantages to both.
The main difference I think is whether you prefer the setting.
The new one is more cohesive and less cartoony, but is missing a lot of the sheer coolness of some of the old ideas. I miss the Tzimisce, they were by far my favourite clan, but they simply wouldn't fit into the new setting at all. Some of their philosophical ideas, maybe, but even they seem rather hollow without the power to back it up.. after all, strip viccisitude from metamorphosis and you're just left with something pretty human.. basically Nietzche's superman.

I think the rules were broken down and simplified to attract more people to the game itself. I think both the old system and the new system have their benefits, although Celerity is still broken IMHO, but that's just because of the campaign settings and the enemies that we use. What I don't like is the storylines for the various games and how much they've changed. They should retain that dark, gothic feel and that they DO NOT do. Also, I feel that the Werewolf and Mage demo campaigns were not as well-written as the Vampire one. I've played through them all and I must say they were fun. I'm still trying to decide on the new Mage system whether I like it or not. I must say I really don't know.
