hi all, i was wondering if there were any rules out there for transforming Warhammer to an RPG. Me and my friends want to try out the game style before we go and get the books for the actual role playing game at Borders.
Yep there is WFRP (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay), go on ebay you should be able to buy a copy of the rule book. I have been playing this for about 8 years. They recently updated the rules but you should still get the old adventures (the enemy within campaign) as it is frankly awsome.
The rules system has sometimes been critisised for not being that realistic when looked at closely but actually it is pretty realisitc when you look at it from the right point of view. Characters take on careers which range from fishermen to outlaws to Judical champions to troll slayers (anything can be made into a career). A career gives you a set of stat increases for example a mercenary gets +20 to his WS (most of the stats are the same as warhammer battle but on a scale of 1-100). The career also gives you skills associated with said career for example dodge blow or carpentry etc.
A character can move across careers to become more advanced. It is here that WFRP is critised as a player may move across a half dozen careers with out actually being any of those things (i.e a thief might not necessarily rob someone), in fact the career system is really designed to represent the 99% of the population of the Old World who aren't adventurers. Thus although the PC's use the career system they are exceptions to the rules.
Combat is very intuitive and very messy, a player if he isn't careful can get his head taken off quite quickly.
The game really comes into its own not as a combat based game but as a horror.investigation game.
If you have any questions just ask.
thanks bernie, and what are the charector/races that can be played in the game?
Well officially the PC's (player characters as I am sure you know) can play Humans, Wood Elfs Dwarfs Halflings and a White Dwarf issue ages ago had rules for Gnomes (which were essentially slightly weaker but more intellegent dwarfs).
However there are rules given for nearly every creature and race in the warhammer world from Chaos Warriors to Orcs plus if you get an older edition you can get rules for some of the creatures GW dropped like Zoats and Fimir. In terms of Monsters there are rules for all the usual suspects deamons griffins dragons etc.
Finally there is even rules for mundane creatures like foxes stoats rabbits horses etc.
It is quite easy to make a player character out of any creature though the rules aren't really designed for it so a bit of improvisation on the part of the Games master would be needed..
In terms of the characters there are probably about 200 hundred careers (and it is obvious once you see how they are layed out that new carrerrs are very easy to make). These include pretty much every activity you can think of in a medieval society.
One of the main criritsims I would have is that although there is a very large section on magic including Necromancy deamonology druidic etc the number of spells is actually kind of limited luckily Realms of Socery came out a few years back which makes a great supplmentary source book.
I would look into buying the Enemy Within Campaign there are about 5 books making up the whole campaign and it is one of the best RPG campaigns produced.
