Hey all, I am currently working on a Codex: Umbra (I had a chance to read the Xenology book and the Umbra interested me) and I need some help figuring out how much of a penalty two of their abilities are. (Umbra: http://www.warhammerwiki.org/index.php?title=Umbra)
The first ability is daylight weakness. Basically what happens is that during Night Fight conditions they have one stat line and when it isn't night fight (ie, daylight) they have a weaker stat line.
Normal: WS4 BS4 S4 T5 W1 I4 A1 Ld8 Sv 2+/5+ (5+ invulnerable save)
Weakened: WS4 BS2 S2 T2 W1 I3 A1 Ld7 Sv2+
Note: The pattern above is pretty standard among all the units: Strength, Toughness and BS are reduced to half (rounded down). Initiative and Leadership are reduced by 1, and it loses its armor save.
Things to point out: The army has quite a few methods of forcing night fight conditions including psyker powers and unit abilities. However, with the Psyker power you are rolling the test at Ld 7 or 8 (or with upgrades, Ld 8 or 9) and the models with it always active are weaker guardsmen with a 6+ Invulnerable save. Lastly there are a few things like the Necron wargear item that makes it temporarily daylight (Solar Pulse). Last thing of note is that this armies weapons are like tyranid weapons: They scale with the models strength. So when it changes to daylight, their weapons strength goes to half as well.
One odd thing to point out though: The army is weaker (or at least has a harder time) in Alpha level missions due to the lack of Dusk & Dawn.
The second weakness I am having trouble evaluating is called "Warp Lure." Basically if there is an enemy, non-umbra psyker on the field, each unit has to make a leadership test or else move their full movement towards the nearest enemy psyker and assault if able.
This is a weird ability and I can't think of how to properly judge it. Many armies have psykers, and they are generally fairly good units (Librarians, grey knight heros and terminators, inquisitors, Hive Tyrants, Sanctioned Psykers, Chaos Lords, Eldar in general, etc). So if they know about the rule and have the psyker, they can just keep him safely in the back or away from whatever the objective is and since I don't have high leadership there is about a 50/50 chance I'll fail. However, being drawn out of cover generally WON'T be a major issue because of how the army has many units with a 5+ invulnerable save and a 2+ armor save. Although, being drawn out in to the open is always a bad thing even ignoring cover saves =p
So the question is: How much of penalty are these? The first one is pretty big since it basically turns my models from terminators in to grots. The second one is an odd one it is completely dependent on units that although good aren't commonly played.
Any advice would be appreciated
Note: Once the army gets out of the draft stages and gets some real playtest results, I'll post it here if people are interested.
wow very cool idea! i was just thinking the other day obscure races like the umbra should be explored more, more input later.
