Imperial Guard Leman Russ Exterminator B

With the loss of str 5 weapons being considered defensive, the heavy bolter sponsons on a Leman Russ, in particular an Exterminator can no longer make it that rolling infantry devourer that it used to be. Instead, we can either sit and get to fire all the guns (aside from when Ordinance fires), or move, and maybe shoot the left sponson at something random.

Because of this, I was thinking "I really wanted to get an exterminator for anti-infantry goodness..but now it's no longer as awesome in a mobile role." How on earth would I manage to get that, without it becoming insanely overpowered, yet keeping some good battlefield mobility?

And then it hit me. The Exterminator B.

Leman Russ Exterminator B

120 Points
WS: 3 | FA: 14 | SA: 12 | RA:10|
Main Armament: Twin Linked Autocannon
You must choose for the hull-mount position: Heavy Bolter (+5 Points) OR Twin-Linked Heavy Stubber (+10 Points) OR Lascannon (+15 Points)
You may upgrade to Heavy Stubber or Stormbolter Sponsons for +15 Points

So, a fully kitted out Exterminator B would cost ~145, plus the cost of a pintle-mount stubber or stormbolter if you really want one.

What do you all think?

EDIT: I think it's clearer now.

Sorry! I was in a bit of a hurry, to be honest! I had to get out the door quick and didn't want to lose the train of thought before it was too late!
I'll edit the original post!

Never really made anything like this before, to be honest. I figure its better to over-cost things than to undercost, until its all hammered out. But it would make more sense to swap the two costs, wouldn't it?

The main reason I was thinking of the higher price, however, was because you can move and fire the twin-linked stubbers alongside the main guns, while you can't do that with a heavy bolter...so, it lends a bit more of an advantage in that regard. At least, that was my original reasonings.

The Malcador Defender is the answer - 5 heavy bolters, demolisher cannon plus either 2 more heavy bolters, 2 autocannons or 2 lascannons, all able to fire at different targets whilst moving (albeit slowly).
Granted, it costs more than twice as much as yours but it is more than twice as effective, but it is for apo games only :(

Your logic in increasing the points cost is good, I think. In the old Codex Catachans they had to pay triple whack for flamers because they used them so effecitvely, so having a rolling gun waggon firing off 9 S4 shots (if you take stubber sponsons) with its defensive weapons on top of 2 S7 needs some sort of price increase to accomodate. Otherwise you might as well just run it in its normal design - thats why the stubber needs to be more expensive as it will kill more if used in its intended role as a mobile gun box.

Well, I was looking through my Imperial Armour Apocalypse book when the idea came to me, courtesy of the Macharious. I honestly hate the design of the Malcador (It is so very ugly), and though it can fire all around, you brought up the most important point: You cannot use it in a normal game. This one would almost be perfect in a normal game. On top of that, it won't be too overpowered simply because of what would happen if you let it roll forward without any sort of ground support element...the moment something assaults it, it will likely die because of the new CC rules against vehicles. You will NEED to support it with an infantry squad or two.

I like the idea of having heavy stubbers, and probably a pintle-mounted twin-linked heavy stubber as well, it's basically an anti-infantry tank par-excellence..2 S7 shots (TL) + 12 heavy stubber shots (TL) will cause problems for any infantry unit, including MEQs...

I agree that Guard don't always require the additional tanks but the Exterminator could be a specialist tank that might be fun to take in the odd battle and certainly encourages a moving battle-line rather than a single "gun line" - all in the best for 5th edition..

That looks pretty solid, I'd just say make the sponson Stubbers TL-ed.. and maybe up the cost a little? A pintle 'Bolter is 10pts... and a 'pintle stubber 12pts..

Maybe keep the bolters as is, as they have a much more restricted arc of fire than a pintle-mounted version, and up the stubbers, if TL-ed, to 25pts? around the cost as 2 pintle stubbers, but TL-ed and with reduced arc of fire.

That is a little to much for a TL-Heavy Stubber I don't think Lasccahnons are that much.

I think +15 for TL Storm Bolters and TL Heavy Stubbers is a good price. The pintle mounted versions may about as much for non-TL versions, but anymore then that and you overpriced a tank with one job: Anti-Infantry. I also think TL is a good idea just because it'll give you more killy power.

I wouldn't think of going more than 20 on any of the stubbers, but +15 seems like a sweet spot to me. The key of this is, however, we're not only going to be paying for the fact that they're twin-linked (which ups their capability dramatically), but also we're going to be paying for being able to move and fire them at the same time. They should not be matched up cost-wise with the pintle-mount simply because the pintle mounted stubber is a totally extra gun.

So, we're looking at +10 for hull mount still, and +15 for sponsons?

Good idea.
Guard need a lot more tanks.

I miss the Exterminator, I do not miss its metal autocannons..

Heavy Bolter is 5 points
So Heavy Stubber loses Str ands AP but gains move and fire
Twin linked makes them about 10 points for hull and if sponsons are twinlinked, 15 for both sponsons.

Would be a nice tank again.

Well then, I think I'm going to model it up..but I won't be able to actually playtest it for a long while.

If someone else is brave enough, I'd sure appreciate it, along with a performance report!

So, I playtested this thing today with a short mockup battle of myself and my nids versus myself and my guard. Let me tell you what, I did some really stupid stuff with my stormtroopers that got the squad slaughtered by a godifex and hormagaunts.....

I rolled out the Exterminator B, aimed at my Sniperfex, and opened up with all 9 barrels....
If not for the fact that I realized as I was removing it from the board that it had a 3+ armor save, instead of using the 4+ cover save (I was also trying to practice the new rules...slow going, that.).....instead, it had 3 wounds on it, so it was still alive.
It was frightening. Next time I'll have to see what it does versus some troops.
Of course, if anyone wants to test it against a MEQ, I'd appreciate it.
