Re-imagining of the Spartan to find it a place in a modern Codex chapter. Feedback welcomed!
LAND RAIDER SPARTAN
The original Land Raider Spartan was a modification of the original Mk I Land Raider, expanding the hull to allow it to carry Terminators into battle, in order to breach the “Ring of Death” on Mars during the Horus Heresy. This design was superseded when the Land Raider chassis was redesigned and became able to transport Terminators normally.
Nearly ten thousand years after this, the idea behind the Land Raider Spartan came to be needed once again. The Omega Marines were waging war on a planet of amphibian xenos which had declared their allegiance to the Tau Empire, and whilst the Omega Marines were able to destroy the outnumbered land-based forces of the Tau with ease, the campaign had become slowed to the point of stopping due to the high defensibility of the Xenos breed’s underwater cave fortresses, protected from artillery or orbital strikes by the planet’s thick bedrock, and accessible only through water, rendering deployment by drop pods or Thunderhawk gunships obsolete.
The only vehicles the Omega Marines had capable of getting their troops inside the enemy strongholds were their Land Raiders, but they were a finite resource and the first assaults made by the Terminators of the first company ended with them having to fall back under the sheer weight of fire the xenos could bring to bear.
Tiring of the Xenos’ defiance, Captain Meracles, Leader of the First Company, quote the words of the Tactica Imperialis: “Identify your target. Concentrate your fire on it to the exclusion of all else. When it is destroyed choose another target.” He had come to realise that in trying to take on multiple targets at once he was spreading his already sparse resources to thin due to the unique situation on this world. He resolved to take down once Xenos stronghold at a time, using the most powerful warriors at his command.
Meracles tasked the Techmarines attached to his campaign to strip down the weaponry from their Land Raiders to allow them to transport as many troops as possible, so that they could bring a significant force to bear against their enemies.
By removing the sponson weapons from all of their Land Raider variants and stripping down the internal systems the Techmarines were able to make enough room to transport a ten man squad of Terminators, or twenty Omega Marines in power armour. They also fitted jury rigged Frag Assault Launchers to the vehicles which did not already carry them in order to help compensate for the reduction of supporting firepower.
With the three Land Raiders Meracles had available to him, he was able to simultaneously deliver thirty Terminators into the enemy stronghold. The First Company were held the beachhead to give the Land Raiders time to return to the Omega Marines forward base, and soon the First Company were reinforced by sixty Marines from the Fifth company.
The first enemy stronghold fell within two hours, and the Xenos were wiped out in less than a month.
LAND RAIDER SPARTAN…………...…………………………………200 Points
A Land Raider Spartan is a Heavy Support choice for a Space Marine army.
Type Tank; BS 4; F 14; S 14; R 14
•1 Land Raider Spartan
•Twin-linked heavy bolter
•Frag Assault Launcher
•Power of the Machine Spirit
•May replace the Twin-linked heavy bolter with:
- a twin-linked assault cannon +20 pts
- a twin-linked lascannon +30 pts
•May take any of the following:
- a storm bolter +10 pts
- a hunter-killer missile +10 pts
- a multi-melta +10 pts
- extra armour +15 pts
Notes: I was tempted to cost this a bit higher because of the amount of Terminators it could carry, however this needs to be balanced against the fairly extreme amount of risk using it to transport a ten man squad would carry – 600 pts in one model! Not sure whether I should drop the TLLC upgrade or not.
It still has the ridicolously hard to kill AV14 all sides, so I'd make it at least 220pts.
TL lascannon should be tops +30pts, as the assualt cannon is better in most scenarios anyway.
Shoudn't it have the grenade launcher things landraiders have?
Apart from that pretty cool idea, and not overpowered because marines have few squads that can fill up all twenty slots.
Out of interest, how would you model the larger transport capacity?
I had thought about costing it slightly higher but I think the fact you already have a potential ten man squad of terminators sitting in it makes it a single model with a potential to serisouly let you down, so it kind of balances. There's also the fact that even the default config is dropping 2 twin linked lascannons which would be worth quite a bit in most scenarios - it's at least 30 points for a single one for most models that can take them.
I might reduce the cost of the TL Lascannon to 30 as you say, 40 might be a bit high since the vehicle is likely to be an agressive transport lending fire support rather than vehicle sniping.
It does have Frag Assault Launchers, they are normally only mounted on the Crusader or Redeemer but I've said they are on all Spartan because of their role.
I was also thinking it should be allowed to transport two squads of power armoured marines, but I'm not sure, it might be too much of a headache in normal games. Of course in Apocalypse it would all be fine!
I didn't model the larger transport capacity - just dropping the sponsons (so it has 2 doors on each side), and as I stated in the fluff it's stripped down internally. Makes it really easy to convert!
