This is based on a vehicle mentioned and briefly described in Raven's Flight (they are even mentioned in the sample audio on the site); Corax takes a couple of them, crewed by Iron Warriors, apart. I'd imagine it would be based on a Vindicator type chassis but with the Earthshaker coming out of the top of the hull rather than the front. Could be a pain to convert, not sure!
THUNDERSTRIKE ARTILLERY TANK
It is rare for Space Marines to employ protracted siege tactics, but there exists in their armoury a vehicle ideally equipped to do so. The Thunderstrike Artillery tank, like so many other Space Martine vehicles, is based upon the Rhino STC blueprint, but modified to mount the devastatingly powerful Earthshaker cannon more commonly seen mounted on the Imperial Guard Basilisk.
Whilst employed during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, the Thunderstrike is not as in keeping with the Space Marines’ role in the Imperium of the 41st Millennium, and their numbers have dwindled to nothing in all but the most well-equipped of Chapters.
THUNDERSTRIKE ARTILLERY TANK …………………………………140 Points
A Thunderstrike Artillery Tank is a Heavy Support choice for a Space Marine army.
Type Tank; BS 4; F 13; S 11; R 10
•May take any of the following:
- a hunter-killer missile +10 pts
- a dozer blade +5 pts
- a siege shield +10 pts
- extra armour +15 pts
Notes: The Demolisher Cannon and Earthshaker compare pretty equally due to their respective stats, but I costed the Thunderstrike higher because I wanted it to cost more than an Imperial Guard Basilisk, due to its increased ballistic skill and armour.
Thoughts? I had considered lowering the armour to 11 11 10 in line with the Whirlwind, but I think it would also need a slight points drop if I did that. I also considered making it open topped (it is alluded to that they are in Raven's flight, but it also mentions crew coming out of the hatches so could be either) but with the option for an enclosed compartment.
I think that sounds like an awesome unit to have.
Maybe you could make it like... open-topped and then give an option to make it not, kinda like the 'Ard Case for the Orks.
Well I made it more for fluff purposes than anything else really, but it could be a nice asset.
Obivously if I made it open topped I would have to drop the points and then make the difference what it costs to put it back on... seems like a lot of hassle lol.
Space Marines just don't seem to do open-topped unless there is violent blowing off of hatches involved. Pretty solid policy, though they could really do with a few more assault ramps on their transports. Also, a little love for side armor wouldn't hurt either...
Cool tank too. I think it would be a worthy counterpart to the vindicator, and I would certainly consider taking it in most of my lists.
Space Marines: Bringing Swords to Gunfights since 30k. And winning.
"Why is there a big red button on the bridge that says 'Exterminatus?'" "Why wouldn't we have one of those? I love that thing."
The old rules for Space Marines "Back In The Day" used to actually state that Space Marine vehicles didn't count as open topped because their power armour was as good as being inside the vehicle (those were the days lol) but then, this still seems to count - not only is it mentioned in the fluff, but normal Land Speeders don't count as open topped, even though they quite clearly are, and the Land Speeder Storm is open topped, but the crew for that wear scout armour...
So I could even model it open topped but leave it as not. Also, modelling it with an enclosed compartment would be a helluva lot easier
Sounds like an excellent conversion project, I like the idea of this one. I've still got too much regular stuff to build and paint at the moment, but one to keep on the back boiler.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
I think a Vindicator, an earthshaker cannon and some plasticard should provide everything needed, I've not put too much thought to it yet but I would like to make one (or three) at some point
I had wanted a Space Marine Artillery so I made this:
Bombarder 300 points
BS 4 FA 14 SA 14 RA 14
Equipment: Smoke launchers, Searchlight, Power of the Machine Spirit, Dozer Blade and Firing Brace
Weapons: Earthshaker Cannon, Whirlwind Missile Launcher and Storm Bolter
Special Rule: Dig In
Dig In: On the controlling players turn, the tank can spend the entire movement phase to dig itself into the ground with its plough and become immobile. After doing this it can fire both its Earthshaker Cannon and Whirlwind Missiles in the same turn. If it wishes to move on another turn, it must first pull itself out of its hole and can only move 6 inches afterwards.
That is quite a major beastie! I've tried to keep it quite toned down myself, I figure if you can do it on a Rhino Chassis, that's what you do. Or at least that's what they would do.
Oh it seems they mount almost anything to LR these days!!Nice ideas both of you,Zero thats a preatty cool model.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
