Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've always thought it would be rad to have a 40k mercenary army and I just had an idea, but I don't know if you can do it or not (I'm guessing not!: Is it possible to chain allies?
eg. I could make a basic human merc force using IG rules, then ally them to Kroot mercs, then ally the Kroot to Eldar to get some rangers as outcast merc dudes. This army would be pretty cool, maybe you could do it with Orks as well. I reckon fluff would be OK as even tho Imperials hate aliens, the Imperium is a big place and there are bound to be Rogue Traders etc who care only for cash...
Another idea I had was have only human and Kroot soldiers, but use Eldar or even Orks for some models (purely for fluff) and count them as humans.
What do you think?
I like the idea of Rogue Traders, I group of misfits from all races acting together for pure profit. You would have to have an ubar bad Leader with an elite HQ to help him keep the infighting to a minimum. There used to be rules for this in the old days and would only require small restriction to keep people from taking advantage of the freedom at hand.
My first instinct says ORKS and IG with untrustworthy Eldar scavengers filling the gaps. Perhaps even some Tau slaves in there being lead around by Kroot warlords.
Can you elaborate on your thoughts.
Go back to the old Rogue Trader rules and check out 'Pirates', then just add in the newer races for an updated force.

"Sometimes I feel like the winner in the Aztec Lucky Virgin contest"
Pirate Lord/Rogue Trader [HSO with CS, can take psykers]
Eldar Pirate cheif [skilled warrior with limited psycic powers]
Ork Pirate Boss [warboss]
Eldar Pirates [as guardians, can mix defender and storm squad weapons]
0-1 eldar rangers
Pirate elites [ws and bs 4 humans with 5+ sv, mix of weapons]
Pirates boarding party [humans with aps and ccws, can take grenades and special weapons, 6+ sv]
Pirate squad [6+ sv humans with ags and can take small heavy weapons]
0-1 Eldar jet bikes
And all the kroot stuff of course
I would probably just do a large Imperium/Eldar army. With the basis of Druids (Cosmetic Balence). So the main enemy would be Chaoic forces.

Cypher is sort of a mercenary isn't he?
Karnov let all of us fulfil our repressed dreams of being a fat Russian man running around in the great outdoors and getting shot at by weird stone heads and crap. You didn't have a repressed fantasy about doing such marvelous things? Well, I don't believe you . . . [djpretzel]
