Well, I was just reading some White Scars fluff, and how they use their bikes to rapidly move in, hit hard and then fall back to attack again. Well, I started thinking. I'm one of those guys that prefers to shoot, I don't mind gettin' in 'dere, but I prefer Daka. So, in their current iteration attack bikes pretty much have to be facing the enemy to shoot them, same with Land Raiders, but they are rather fragile units, and truthfully the Vyper is such an awesome unit because it can move in any direction relative to the enemy and still shoot it, thereby staying out of the enemy's weapon ranges, just like Eldar ships in BFG. I know that some Chapters prefer these hit and run style tactics- White Scars, Raven Guard for example. So having a modified bike/ speeder capable of moving to just within weapons range, shooting and backing out before they can get shot would be a very sensible thing for them to have.
Then another idea hit, while imagining said Land Speeder moving perpendicular to the enemy I suddenly say an AC-130 throwing its ordnance at a cluster of orks... So, let's dissect this idea and see if it fits within Astartes Modus Operandi.
Everyone knows the Marines lack heavy firepower because they need to be able to pick up and be fighting a thousand miles away in an hour. Yet at the same time, everyone knows that Marines need said heavy firepower just like every other army. In cases where excessive firepower is needed they employ Whirlwinds, Vindicators, Thunderfire Cannons, and even Orbital Bombardments. But all of these lack one very important characteristic. They aren't very mobile or quick to deploy, and they tend to need close range LOS to get the job done well. They need mobility, firepower and speedy deployment all rolled in to one, non of the current options give this.
The solution? Take your typical Thunderhawk Transport. Build a platform capable of being grappled by the Thunderhawk's. Put a couple of long barreled Battle Cannons on it and watch the fireworks.
?What do you think? Yay or nay?
I'm thinking base 2 Twin Battle Cannons. Not OP, but gives them something they can't have otherwise. Of course there's limitless options, 2 twin Whirlwind Launchers? Maybe a giant rack of 20 Hellstrike Missles, or 2 Earthshakers.
I am a little confused on what you are saying about the base of a Thunder Hawk and the style of a C-130. Did you take a C-130 model and kitbash it to make closer and look more like a Thunder Hawk or am I just completely lost in all of this?
One by One do we destroy this world in which we live. Inch by Inch we creep towards our destruction. The sad thing is, it was our own doing...
You take a normal Thunderhawk Transport, make absolutely no modifications to it. Then you adapt a weapon payload able to be carried by its magnetic grapples. Thereby giving you the equivalence of a Land Raider's weight of weapons and ammo to be carried on a thunderhawk. 2-3 Battlecannons I'd say, probably equitable to an Earthshaker too. Its got loads of possibilities and truthfully doesn't infringe on any hard fluff, and in fact reinforces the Marine 'never stop moving' mantra by giving them a previously overlooked source of long range, quickly deployable ordnance.
I think you'd be better off buying a Stormraven and modeling its anti-personnel weapons (heavy bolter, assault cannon and hurricane bolters) all on one side of it. It would be much more likely to get your opponent's permission to play and you can use it in regular games.

Those weapons are all too short ranged, it defeats the purpose. And in Apocalypse anything goes usually, so player's permission is easy to get.
I understand your reasoning here, I really do, but It appears to me that the thunderhawk gunship itself already fills in this role fluffwise.
Modelingwise, instead of making it some sort of a container to hang underneath a thunderhawk transporter, I'd envisage it more as a modified thunderhawk gunship where the weapons are integrated in the fuselage of the aircraft. That way it would resemble more closely to the AC 130 spectre/spooky gunships you are referring to.
Sorry for the late reply, this was just too good a thread not to post in as i have a brilliant idea for it
The AC-130U spectre gunship has 3 main weapons on it, a 30mm gattling gun, a 75mm cannon from a bradley transport vehicle, and the 108mm cannon from a M1A1 Abrams main battle tank, to represent this, you could use a few weapons
The gattling gun can be one of 2 weapons, firstly, as it is an apocalypse peice, and i assume unable to transport, a weapon from the imperial guard, the punisher cannon, except this one has more than one barrel, imagine, lets say, 4. The profile could be something like Range 36 S5 AP- Heavy 40 twinlinked? for one of 3 weapons on a high cost machine, not to bad, it could also be a titan weapon, the Vulcan mega bolter (my favourite idea) As a representation of a gattling gun equivalent, i think it's fair.
The 75mm cannon is a bit more tricky, first thing that comes to mind is autocannon as it is of similar shape, size etc, but a bit underwhelming maybe? i think maybe a weapon like the thunderfire, having multiple low AP high S blasts, maybe S7 AP5 Heavy 4 Large Blast, seems reasonable
Then the Last place, the 108mm battle cannon is battle between two weapons really, the Battle cannon or the earthshaker cannon, both of which are very good, the earthshaker being much better in this case, i think more of a twin linked battlecannon to represent the large amount of room for targeting systems on a AC40K Reaper gunship (potential name?)
So theres the options, i like it and i think it's a fantastic idea, a circling gunship in the air sounds so cool!
A quick wiki says the AC-130U mounts a 25mm Gau-12 Gatling, 40mm Bofors Autocannon, and a 105mm Howitzer. Which could be reasonably represented by a double-range Punisher, a regular Autocannon, and a Battle Cannon. Or you could just bring a regular Thunderhawk with a Turbo-laser Destructor if you want excessive firepower.
