I think the ap system works fine, exept for the case of extremes
ex: I think it is ok that guardsmen can save from a shoota and get pasted by a bolter. It's ok for marines to have boltrounds bounce off and get pasted by plasma
but.... terminators shrug off krak missiles, light-tank busting autocannons bounce off of power armor
so I say... add the 'choppa' effect to weapons
the choppa effect being 'best save is 4+'
candidates for the choppa effect- s8 weapons like krak missiles
would it seem reasonable for an anti-tank krak missile to degrade terminator armor to a 4+ sv?
call it something like "the force of impact of this weapon is so devestating that any thickness of infantry armor will feel its effect"
and my own idea to further refine the rule...
s6+ weapons work against armor 3+, but not 2+ (so a marine hit by an autocannon will have his armor degraded, but a terminator can shrug it off)
s8+ weapons will degrade even 2+ armor to a 4+ (krak missile)
another way to do it would be 'if a weapon's strength double's the target's toughness without penetrating the armor, the force of the blow is so powerful that armor is degraded to a 4+ at best'
so 'instant death' strength weapons also degrade armor.
If we go this path... a s6 weapon would degrade the armor of a SoB, but a s6 weapon would not degrade the armor of a space marine or a wraithlord. A krak missile would degrade terminator armor, but still bounce off a carnifex.
or even simpler, make it like rending. Some weapons have it, some don't. Weapons that should have this effect... are missiles and anything s6+ using ordinance templates.
weapons without ap do not have the choppa effect (since they have no penetration power and their high strength is due to other means)
Thats sounds interesting, but they could just use some type of armour modification system like (-1 if s6, s7 and does not penetrate)(-2 if s8 or higher and does not penetrate).
Hmm...kinda like 1st Edition used to do. All the guns had an AP value, but instead of, say, AP 3 piercing any armor that was 3+ or worse, it would reduce the save by 3 (hence AP3). So a Marine saving on a 3+ that was hit by an AP3 weapon would only save on a 6 (3 armor + 3 AP = 6 armor save).Originally Posted by Bruiser117
This was also the edition that let Terminators save on a 3 or better rolled on 2D6. I think the fluff described their armor as being designed to work on hulls of space ships and exploring derelict space hulks. It needed to be strong enough to take small meteor hits.
