Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've just had a bit of an idea about a sniper game for 40k and i want your help/ideas/comments about weather or not it would work. I was thinking about a sniper game with say a few snipers on each team in a ruined city. im not really sure how the rules for the game would have to work. They would have to have a lot of stuff about spotting the enemy and stuff like that in them. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well, for this 'sniper fight' we can use the following rules.
I am imagining a variation on Kill-Team using only snipers on both teams. I am getting a very "Enemy at the Gates" sort of feel.
-All snipers will have move through cover USR.
-All snipers will roll for spotting distance as per the Night-Fight rules. Since they will be hiding as they move through the ruins
-Sniper rifles will be able to be fired on the move as Rapid-fire weapons. However, if they are used in such a manner, they use the firer's BS, and will wound on a 5+ instead of 4+
I'm sure that there are other ideas. And I definitely recommend the cityfight stratagems and Kill-team equipment making an appearance.
* "I'm Significant!" -screamed the dust speck
* "Call me old fashioned, but an evil ascension to power just isn't the same without someone chanting faux Latin in the background."
A sniper game would be very cool. I think the rules would definitly emphasise some things more than others, for example accuracy and range. Armour piercing wouldn't be such an issue because tanks probably wouldn't make such an appearance. Basically I think to make a really good sniper game set in the 40K universe there would have to be a lot of rules changed.
Hmmm, this sounds good! And maybe you could get away with not so much rules changes, but additional "sniper fight" rules.
No turn limit
Each side has to have equal points
Only models carrying weapons with the rule "Sniper" are allowed
Standard game turns: move, shoot, assault
All Sniper weapons hve the rule Heavy 1 (but can be rapid-fired as stated earlier)
Here are some others that I thought up:
Loners: The sniper team deploys within 2" of each other (standard unit coherency) but from then on can head off separately, and are treated as separate units for the purposes of shooting/attacking and Victory Points's.
Take Cover: The sniper team takes up position behind rubble, etc. They cannot shoot or move this turn but gain +1 to their cover save. (roll of 1 always fails and may not be combined with Sight In)
Run: The sniper runs from cover to cover, moving quickly but giving away his position. The sniper uses his full move and/or fleet distance. Next enemy turn, this sniper can be wounded on a 3+ and has -1 to cover saves.
Crawl: The sniper crawls stealthily across the ground, avoiding being seen. The sniper can move up to 3". Next enemy turn this sniper has their normal cover save.
Sight In: The sniper carefully takes their time to sight in on the target. For one turn the sniper does not move or shot. Next turn this sniper will wound their target on a 3+ and takes -1 off cover saves. If this sniper is hit and wounded in the enemy turn between these turns, then Sight In is cancelled
Higher Ground: Snipers on higher ground/levels (at least 3") gain +1 to cover saves and takes -1 of cover saves off models that he is attacking.
there are a few, see what you think and feel free to comment/criticise
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
For a sniper game I would go for something completly different. For starters there would only be two or three snipers on each side at the most. However both sides get some kind of hidden counter markers which are moved, one or more of these are the actual snipers which are only releaveled once they fire. You can fire at a hidden counter but it might just be decoy. Obviously these rules could be expanded but this would be the start point.
I like the ideas, im really getting pumped about this i think it would be a really fun game to play with friends. I think that it wil have to be a bit like kill team as far as wargear and stuff goes but i was thinking of making an entirely new rule set with a warhammer 40k flavor. I think making it a mod will make things a little bit too confusing. Just to clarify things i am thinking of a game involving only about 3 snipers max on each team or if you are playing with a few people only 1. If anyone here is really interested i will start up a thread on my PC gaming clans forum and use that as the base for the project (|=F10=| Clan :: Home). I think there are several main things that this sniper system should focus on:
-Spotting the enemy target - things like cover and distance will have a effect
-Shooting - lots of modifiers
-Wounds - depending on how long you want the game to last you could assign a cirtain number of wounds needed to kill the sniper
One thing i think that could be the downfall of this game is close combat. If the snpers get too close then the whole game will fall to pieces. Im not really sure how this could be fixed though.
As i said if anyone is really interested in helping me to develop this idea further head over to my PC gaming clans forum where there will be a thread set up:w00t:
Enemy at the Gates was the main inspiration for this game and that is the sort of feel im looking for. Originally i though of doing it for WW2 wargaming but i thought it would be easy to to it for 40k because of the support i could get.
