    New Spacemarine rumours.

    jas of Wargamerau.com posted this.

Yep, no real surprise but new figures for 5th Edition.
Just spoke to a mate of mine who is a GW Manager in the UK and he informs me of two notable releases

    1. An all new medium tank which will come in between the predator and landraider
    2. Landspeeder transports for scout troops

I've been hearing of a tank for awhile but this is the first time I've heard that it will weigh in between the 2 mentioned above. The landspeeder transports are in line with the new GW approach to marines for 5th edition, which is to make marines more of a strike force than a static army.
It seems games designers want to align marines more with the fluff - small mobile forces that pin point targets, eliminate them, then get the hell out of dodge, leaving clean up for the IG.
Plastic droppods will finally come out to coincide with the new codex.
Also army traits are gone but are instead linked to the force commander ie. take a particular armies force commander who has furious charge, then your army has furious charge, making them XYZ Chapter. This is to encourage players to take force commanders instead/in addition of the chaplian/librarian.

Now before I get the naysayers, this guy is one of my best mates and doesn't speak crap. He's pretty low key. Secondly, a lot of this info comes from one of the play testers, who is a close mate of his. Thirdly, he didn't speak about anything he didn't know about ie the Plantestrike supplement.

    Hmmm Eldar Spacemarines :rofl.

Although not SM codex based, one of the planet strike releases will be a fully plastic LR Crusader :C which is good cause I've never been inclined to buy the mess of a kit the current Crusader is.

Army Doctrines are definitely going, Ive heard rumours about a limited list of chapters types to pick from, which may be the force commander options JvK speaks of

I've heard this tank rumour as well, and it really suprises me. The last thing I expected GW to put out was a third SM tank body). For a quick response force they already have a crazily large range of vehicles.

Those are interesting rumors, to be sure. I like the idea of the Space Marines lining up with the fluff more, and being more of a mobile strike force. The idea of Commanders deciding traits is very interesting as well, I wonder how the Chapter of Legend will be handled, if at all, and how Special Characters will be handled.

Yeah, I'm also curious about this new chapter organisation. I can't imagine it any other way but traits, but it's good to see that Commanders are going to be promoted as an HQ choice above Chaplains and Librarians. At the same time, I don't want them to get shunted too far to the side because they are quite cool as well. I like the idea of Marine armies coming more into line with the fluff - I find that rapid strike forces are also quite challenging to play (cf. Dark Eldar). I am excited.

I heard this as well, but didn't believe it at the time. Though, it seems more in line with GW's current trend of steering people towards using special or named characters. (A mistake, in my opinion. I want to make my own characters.)

Gearing Marine players towards being led by actual commanders makes sense flufflwise as well. They're the ones most trained in strategic planning, not Chaplains or Librarians.

Sure, it makes sense that if I take Kayvaan Shrike as my commander, I'm playing Raven Guard, but not every Raven Guard force is led by Shrike.

I still think there will be some kind of option for DIY chapters, though they will likely be more subtle than the traits system. Too many players have DIY chapters that they've put too much effort into for GW to just declare, "OK, fellows, you're all Ultras...except you guys in yellow. You're Fists."

    That sounds awesome,

I've always wanted smaller squads but never liked the combat squad system, a new tank is good if not borderline unnecessary and the idea of all the first foundings getting their own special rule(s) + new special characters? man I can't wait I'm nervous I wanna know what Sallies get for those special rules, although I admit it'll probably end up being "get a 7th turn on a 4+" and "take two special weapons timmy so you can melt yourself deeper in plasma while your much needed bolter shots laid back at home next to the armory bed where you usually perform your wet dream ritual". Quite a mouthful that special trait.
But Nevertheless, I want to know for sure, O man if Xavier comes back I'm painting my balls blue and then dipping em in some varnish finishing with a gold outline and white horseshoe symbol in the middle just so I can imitate an over commercialized product at a casual dinner party as a sort of cruel joke on my family and friends.

    And sometimes strangers...

Indeed I prefer to make my own commander (A terminator captain with thunder hammer and storm shield) as I do not like using special characters in 40K. The main reason for this is that I feel like it becomes the army of that special character rather than the army of the character I created.

That's exactly it. Sure, so even though you're playing Imperial Fists, there is enough of a gap in their fluff to where you don't know what their, say, fifth company is like, who leads it, what his style is. If you're stuck playing a special character, you lose some of the sense of 'ownership'

Ok, so I guess I really want to know what all this means for DIY chapters. I've got 2,000 points worth of stuff that I was planning to do in a custom color scheme (if I can ever work it out -- *sigh*), along with at least one major trait. Does this mean no DIY chapter at all, or will they be smurf clones ruleswise but allowed custom colors, conversions, fluff etc.?

If they put the kai-bosh on DIY chapters I will be one angry player, and I need to know NOW, before I waste all my time and money. No offense to those of you who like the named chapters, but if I wanted smurfs, Imp. Fists, Space Wolves, Dark Angels or Black Templars I'd have bought their codices/models. I want to be able to get creative with my chapter (hence the fluff in my wip thread in the sig). Will we not be allowed that any more?
Mickey: "You're just making this up as you go along!"
The Doctor: "Yuuuup. But I do it brilliantly!"
