Welcome to Librarium Online!
What do you think about the rumours of GW releasing a new Space Marine Codex so soon after the last compared to other armies. Being a Marine player myself there are a few things in there that I hope they dont change;
For one the Chapter Traits, this is one of the great things of the SM Codex, being able to customize your force the way you want to. Having all of your army infiltrate, close to the enemy and arming Tactical Squads with bolt pistos, or having a Techmarine as your commander, or giving most squads Tank Hunters was one of the most valuable things in the codex.
AS for the new layout of the new codexes, it will do some good, it will straighten out what and what not units can get, although the armoury was nice.
Enough, of my opinion, what do you think about this rumoured release?
Expect to see:
combat sqaud, no more 5 man las/plas sqauds for you ( for all codex chapters, might be changable by traits.
terminators sqauds are 5 max with only 1 heavy weapon
scouts becoming elites.
less assaultcannons in the list.
Also don't hope on the traits allowing you to break the FoC, GW is removing that.
As a marine player, but also one who has other armies, I really think the marines don't need another codex as yet and GW should focus on other armies that have been waiting a lot longer, ie. Dark Eldar who have waited nearly 10 years now.
I expect to see combat squads but I don't think they need to be so restrictive. (I use 5 man and 10 man squads 99% of the time except for scouts.
Couldn't it be more like Chaos?
Something along the lines of 5 man squad with Sgt for 75 pts.
Marines are armed with Bolter, combat weapon or bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades
Sgt may replace his bolter for a combat weapon for free
you can buy up to 5 more marines for 15 pts each.
Sgt may be upgraded to Vet Sgt for X pts
Vet Sgt may be given X, Y, Z at pts
One Marine may replace his bolter with plasma gun, plasma pistol, meltagun, flamer for x pts
If the unit is size 10 men. One additional marine may replace his bolter with plasma gun, plasma pistol, meltagun, flamer for x(or possibly y pts) pts or Missle Launcher, Heavy Bolter for y pts
(Maybe restrict Lascannons, Multi meltas and Plasma Cannons for Devastators and reduce their cost to a degree to compensate)
Allow Transport vehicle to be purchased as normal
This lets the Tactical Squad be flexible, in both size and function, gives nearly the same flexibility as they have now. Removes the need for the Trait Cleanse and Purify(? thats a guess, the one that lets you take to assault weapons instead of a heavy weapon)
You could even go as far as options like.
If the unit is full Strength (10 men) and is led by a Vet. Sgt then all models in the unit may take one of the following options:
True Grit and Counter attack for +30 pts
Furious Charge for +30 pts
Infiltrate for +30pts
Arch Overfiend & Grand Despot
I currently play:
Doom Eagle Space Marines
Hive Fleet Omega Tyranids
Goff Ork Boyz(dead)
Tau of O'me
Inquisitorial Xeno Hunters
and my attempted foray into fantasy
'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
What I would really like to see in the new codex is a point-cost drop for scouts. I believe that a cost of 10 or 11 points with a drop of strength or WS to 3 would be ideal because a) scouts will be used more in games b) scouts will be actually.. scouts (fluffwise) and not SM in worse armor (boring!). C)Gives even more flexibility to SM commanders. The way it is now scouts are too expensive!
Due to "They Shall Know No Fear," you'll never see Space Marines in future codices costing as little as Chaos Marines. :-/
Nids & Guard

Who knows, it might me that they would still get true grit but have to give up their bolt pistol. I personally would still like to see them keep it as most of my marines have Infiltrate, True Grit and Counter Attack.
Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
We can get a pretty good idea of the basics of the new Codex based on what we have seen in the DA and BA Codex rules. Where one Codex deviates, the other does not in most catagories.
Things that will be up in the air - how will they treat Codex Librarians?
How will they change the traits?
Speaking of traits, we can kiss giving the whole army special abilites good-bye. So no more Infiltrating the entire army. As we can see with the DA and BA rules, only a select number of units will be promoting the "reputation" of the Chapter with the majority of the army remaining 'stock'.
So a Chapter that takes See, But Don't Be Seen as a trait (assuming the traits are retained), would likely only be able to Infiltrate their Veterans - where a non-trait Codex army would not be able to do so at all.
Another rumor is the Special Character/trait system. In this way, taking a Special Character gives your army certain capabilities. A good current example of how it could be implemented would be a character similar to Shryke. He has special abilities and he may take a retinue with the same abilities.
Those are my predictions.
