I have seen all the new SM heroes ,veterans like Sternguard etc, vehicles like Crusader/redeemer etc but no one as yet seen any basic Space Marines 5th edition? I have heard they are coming out the End of Oct just after the launch of all the other SM new stuff on Oct 18th here in the UK. I know they will use the new bolter's like these on the Sternguard Veteran squad but don't know nothing else? any of you guys no more?
I wouldn't expect them to bring out new tactical squad models as they aren't really needed the current ones are very good. New packaging is a possibility but not really new models.
The Sterngaurd bolters are meant to be special to fire the different types of rounds and not the standard issue or so I have been told.
yes they will have a special fire but i have been told that rumour is the standard Space Marine will get upgraded and the new edition will come out 2 weeks after the stuff on Oct 18th. the bolter's should change as they are a old models and have not really changed in 10yrs just similar to what they did with the change on the new Termie Storm bolter's they changed the cartridge. Eventually after 10yrs or so. If the marine in general will have a change i don't know but the bolter i think will be revamped to look similar to the Sternguards.
I don't see why GW would bother redoing the currtent bolters. They are really cool as they are. I'm guessing the reason the Sternguard have drum magazines is because of the Special Amunition.
What more concerns me are things like new razorback and new dreadnought models to support some of the rumored options. As for the tactical marines though, I don't see too much reason to redo them. Especially considering that they get a ML and flamer for free which has been part of the box for some time now.
They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my SPESS MAHREENS!
If G.W re-do the basic marines I hope they make them true scale otherwises meh,
I wouldn't see the point.
I AM BOOMER!
Making them the "right" size would throw a lot out of whack. First off, true LOS rules would present a disadvantage (harder to hide them behind a wall). They also would look disproportionately large compared to most other 40k models, including Tau fire warriors, Eldar guardians, etc.
While this may be fluff-correct, GW has decided not to do it this way. My guess is it's to make the models (that's ordinary infantry, mind you) across all ranges consistent enough to prevent arguments (can you imagine the True Line of Sight fights?) and to promote a more uniform appearance.
Need proof? Look at Necrons. They aren't truescale, either--they're larger than they should be. The artwork suggests warriors, for example, aren't much bigger than most people, but players who hate the hunched-over 'crons have "truescale" converted them into standing upright. In that pose, they are clearly much taller than guardsmen, and maybe even "truescale" marines. Why? because GW originally modeled them in that hunched position, and if they were the "right" size they'd look half as tall as most models when bent over like that, so they are modeled a bit larger to compensate.
There are other out-of-proportion models, too (I won't even get into the vehicle problems), and in another thread I recall someone saying that the standard infantry base is supposed to represent the cc range of the model, which suggests that NONE of the infantry models are technically the "right" size, but modeling them correctly would make them look like Flames of War rejects.
If this is the case, then the model sitting on the base is never supposed to be the right size anyway, so GW just makes them look all roughly the same height, assuming no one is going to have a big problem with it. My personal opinion: If you have to take issue with SMs being modeled incorrectly, you'd have to address a WHOLE lot of other stuff that's not right, too, and that's just not worth the effort. Is it really THAT bad that marines seem to be too short?
If the notion is to make marines look different and change the clip on the average bolter, wouldn't one be able to safely assume that the marines in AoBR would reflect these changes? Since they went to the trouble to make these new tac marines for the set it would seem strange to release different-looking tac marines later.
The new models are shown here:

No new tactical marines. Sternguard bolters are highest tech as they are for the 1st Company Vets. So no new bolters for normal marines.
