I am in the Beta for the 40k computer game (as with half the world) and after playing the beta, I don't know if I will be getting the game now. It's cool to finally play a RTS in the 40k world, but it's too little too late.
The game plays like starcraft (yes, which was a rip on 40k) which is good, but starcraft has been out for what, 8 years now? The biggest letdown, is that the combat is just not satisfying. Sure there are some cool animations here and there, but it's mostly blaise.
Another flaw I have found, is that dreadnaughts, or anything like dreadnaughts (wraithlords/defilers) simply rule the game. I had the max number of dreads (five, I think) and I obilterated the computer, including it's captain, and librarian.
The biggest thing for rabid 40k fans, is the "conversion" of real time events to what we are used to in "tabletopland." My Predator kept on shooting troops with it's lascannons, taking several shots to kill even the lowliest of troops, which really sucked. My Dark Reaper squad was annihilated by a guardian squad; sure I guess it's possible, just highly unlikely.
Also, from what I can see so far, the Bloodthirster, and the Avatar simply are too powerful. I used the Avatar and Two wraithlords and wiped out the enemies base without taking hardly any damage. The Ork Squiggoth is pretty much in the same boat too, VERY powerful.
Whenever large battles occur, it's a friggin' mess on the screen, very hard to make out what is going on. The more I played DOW, the more I wished they would have simply made "EPIC." The only reason you really want to take any squads of regular troops, is to capture the "resource" points that give you, well, resources. Otherwise, it's the support and heavy characters that rule the day.
They did a good job on Chaos, and I from what I have played so far, Chaos appears to be the "one to beat" in Dawn of War.
One last thing, don't take terminator squads, they blow in DOW.
Where did you get the chance to play this!!! please tell me i have been looking forward tot his game for a long time and will be dissapointed if it sucks.
The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people are awesome and can kick your ass.

You know, the point of a beta is to tweak things before the final release. You get those comments back to the developers and they'll probably sort it if enough people complain of it.
"It fits like clothes made out of wasps!"
Also I would say that there still are too many bugs in that beta to make a honest review of it, wait till the final release before you make any reviews, untill then make previews.
I know it's a beta, and balance issues will change, but at it's core, it's very, very, generic RTS. That cannot be changed with tweaking. As it stands now, things just don't feel right. Terminators should be able to plow through guardians without having to fight a very long melee to do so.
I'm in the beta dude and they call it a beta for a reason... I know what your saying. But it's a beta, they are gonna redo a bunch of stuff.... the last patch was HUUUUUUUUUGE! dreadnoughts and stuff seem unfair but all you need is rockets...
POEM - All you need is rockets.
Rockets, all you need its rockets!
Rockets, you shove em in pockets!
Rockets and choopas, plasma guns and bolters.
Flamers and gernades, swords and storm bolters.
Cause in the end, all you need is rockets in yer pockets!
Ha ha ha See they are probly gonan reduce vehciles to 15 population also... 20 is to high. Dradnoughts are gonna be twinked next patch. But once again if you get anti vehcile squadas you can take em out. People don't relize thats.
Bye for now remember its a beta.
If termies could plow through any squad, or dark reapers blow anyone to bits, the game would have to be turn based. In a RTS, troops have to be able to take a lot of punishment, so that you actually have time to respond. If DOW was anything like the 40k game or the 40k fluff. One squad of space marines would eliminate your entire base before you even knew they were there.
Vehicles are powerful, yes, but you just have to counter them with your own vehicles.
The big baddies are NOT too powrful, they cost a fortune in points and power, adn they get owned by regular squads with missile launchers, them and dreadnoughts.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel allright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace, and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
Goblin kroozade of revengyness: win:19 draw:10 loss:9
Well from alot of the things you said it seems that your not using the units propery, such as counter typing and out manuvering. Also the squigoth has a right to kick ass. Do you know how hard it is to build in a competitive game: Have 61 (or so) pop 900 rec and 1100 powa. Now what do you do to beat it. Avoid it, counter type it, meet it with your "uber vehical". Plus termis are awsome as is any thing else the come in a drop pod. Just drop em behinde enimy lines to sandwich them, cut off retrete, or kill the anoying shooty unit thats kicking your ass. That is possible because they come as a surprise and some thing you arent prepared for. For me the game is alot more interesting if you know what to do. Also Comps suck.
00:12:50-) (+Hard_Aun|sleepage) anyway, three months back i got out of bed and came downstairs loud, fast and naked with a club
OK i agree with the last things said, and i dont believe that DoW sucks, i think the complete opposite! I have played many online games against some tough competitors and i have come close to victory or victory by following a simple rule, build a defence line and then send up ur troops and vehicles once you have a combination of weapons to deal with what ever you come across, and once you know what your deal with mould your forces to combat it! simple really, im no rocket scientist but its all about thinking ahead rather than trying to play it like its the TT version! also nothing is too powerful in DoW, sure somethings are powerful but not over the top, they all have weaknesses, and that is they are either short ranged or aimed at killing armoured units only, simply match a force to counter that!
I wouldn't give it a review just yet, we have yet too see the story lines behind the single player campain. I bet it's going to kick ass. Though it mostlikly will be a lot like warcraft 3 story wise (beat one story open a new army) they can still do so much like add new units, weapons, tanks, etc. The camra is awsome too, no RTS has had a camera this manuverable (that I've seen) who knows they may even make another game with IG and Tyranids ^_^
