this is probably nothing and just utter rubbish, but ive been hearing that the nids and the crons are due to be updated before the dark eldar, on the basis that a lot more people play them and theres not a huge amount wrong with them, but still some issues that need resolving. Just thought id throw that out there to see what comes up, as it is im sceptical, but in a way it makes sense, any thoughts?
That seems to be the current rumor running around the various forums these days.
(WH40K) Dark Eldar - (12,000pts) Sisters of Battle - (5000pts) Dark Angels -(3500pts) (WHFB) Dark Elves - (10,000pts) Beastmen - (5000pts) Empire - (3000pts) Wood Elves - (1500pts)
Yes. The release schedule (been discussed more than once) puts nids in late 09, crons in early 10 (OH GOD THE 0# WON'T WORK ANYMORE!), and DE in late 2010.
I might have mistaken this, as I am posting from memory.
I'd like to know were you got the idea for nids in 2009, the only ones confirmed for 40K are IG in May and Planetstrike in Juli, with semi-confirmation of the SW in Q4.
While it really wouldn't be surprising because the Dark Eldar need SUCH an overhaul while the 'Nids and Necrons just need a few tweaks, GW really hasn't said anything super-official about anything that far-off in the future.
In short, it wouldn't be surprising, considering GW's pattern of behaviour, but don't place any bets.
WHFB: Dwarfs || WH40k: Imperial Fists, Necrons || WM/H: Trollbloods || BFG: Necrons
Not true; Master Avoghai over on the B&C spoke to Mr Kelly at GD France and he confirmed DE after Wolves.
News from GD Paris - The Bolter and Chainsword : A 40k Space Marine ResourceMoreover, the 2 next codex concern armies that wait for a very long time a publication : SW and DE, and it would be unfair to delay the release of those codex to update a more recent one.
Yeah this stuff about a 'nid update is WAY outta left field for me, too. Heck, I don't even play nids, and just reading their codex proves to me that they do NOT need an update. Actually, their setup has a similar format to the current codex trend, that is, listing options and point costs with the unit entries, rather than just the "may take from the armoury," and making the player flip back to the "armoury" and build from there. In fact, it almost looks like the nid codex was a bit ahead of its time. I see no reason for now to do anything with it.
Now, Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, and Necrons need new codices... badly. I said it in that order because new codices usually mean new models, and outside the Inquisition there is no army in 40k more badly in need of updated sculpts than Dark Eldar. (EDIT: You could also argue that the =I= armies need updates even MORE badly, but we're just talking about stuff we know is coming out relatively soon.)
I also disagree that Necrons don't need a revamp. They work fine (I do fairly well with my current build, thanks much), but there is the potential there for SO much more, I can't WAIT for the new codex!
As I understand it, play testing is actually done a lot and it is that aspect which takes up a lot of time.
An overhauled DE would require a good chunk of play testing. If the Tyranids were only to be updated to 5th Ed. with a few tweaks here and there rather then overhauled, it would mean much less testing would be required, and thus they could do it quicker.

As of Tyranid 5th Ed. codex I have the Gaunts I wanted. I did, however, loose the sniperfexs I relied upon and they were more important then the gaunts.
Ah well looks like it was just random rumour after all, however upon looking back through the codex, it seems to me that i could fix most of the problems within about 5 minutes. in fact i will now attempt to do so.
Lictors cost 50 points each.
hormaguants cost 8 points with no upgrades.
Spore mines do not give kill points (not sure if thats current or not)
Raveners have a 4+ save.
Elite fexs may be taken in games of 2000 points or more.
2 of the same gun can count as twin linked or as 2 guns but not both in 1 game.
Venom cannons can penetrate armour, but no longer have a +2 strenght.
Devourers count as 2x at S3 or below, other wise normal. (2 Shot - 1S)
Now im no rules developer but it seems to me it would take too long to sort it out, heck even an FAQ might do. Ah well looks like the nids are going to wait. Thanks all.
