    GW venures into WW2?

So, I just hopped on LO like I do almost every day to check up on the recent goings-on when I saw the news update on the front page. A World War 2 game by Games Workshop? That "does not owe anything to Warhammer"? I can tell you that that was certainly NOT what I was expecting. Not entirely unpleasant either though. As I see it, they have a fair chance of succeeding since they are already a superpower of the tabletop wargaming world, thus granting them a knowledge of how the market works and what would appeal to gamers in a new game. However, I am worried that the game with carry the same price tag as games workshop is infamous for. Only time will tell, I'm afraid.

In the mean time, what do all of you think? Will you be checking it out as soon as it comes out, or do you think that this is a terrible idea?

I wonder why they are going to do this? Oh yeah Flames of War.

different scale? would have been great bits for IG armies everywhere.

I assume if FW are doing it, there will be no plastic models? Sounds like it will be very expensive!

It will be interesting to see a game not based on the warhammer system.

It may be interesting. Perhaps the parts will fit with 40K stuff, then we can use them. The basic idea for a detactment in 40K comes from WW2.

Great, if this is true it's just one more thing to delay updates to the various codices/army books.

@omegoku: It appears the FW is doing it, but I think that there's a possibility that if it becomes a hit, it might teleport over and become GW's fourth major game, in which case the prices would likely drop a bit. It makes sense to me that they're doing it through Forgeworld first as a sort of "testing ground" before making it a mainstream production game.

@Leech: I was just reading the article again and it says "The game is designed for 20mm figures although it will work equally well with 15mm (adjustments will be necessary for 28mm)." Seems to me that with a little tweaking, we could try out the rules system using our own models. I could be completely wrong, though.

What I'm really hoping for is that they don't play it by the history books, but instead give us freedoms to make our own custom little army. Obviously we won't be able to have Orks running around in Nazi uniforms, but being able to create your own regiment with it's own colors and backstory would be excellent.

From what I gather from FoW you can replay battles from the books or you can just play the missions. Don't know why you can not do both. Nothing stopping anyone from making their own army, with cammo pattern and history. Then again 40K and to some extent Fantasy is how the person wants his world to be. It is easy there is no set rules on how we come up with are fluff. You can pretty much make it up as you go.
