I thought I would bring this to attention of anyone that doesn't frequent other 40k sites. An article was published earlier today on the wargaming blog Bell of Lost Souls stating that GW has announced that it will be removing all metal models from its product line. You can read the full article here. (Apparently this showed up a few days go on a couple other sites, but I really only visit BoLS and LO so it was news to me).
So, what do you think of this? How does this bode for the hobby? There's been a lot of speculation as to if they are going to replace ALL of the current metal sculpts (seems logical since they're going to stop making them and they need to keep selling them). And if they are, with what? Plastic? Resin? A hybrid of the two? Some other material entirely? Who knows? Also, it poses the question of why they released new metal SCs for GKs when they knew this was coming.
Anyway, what do all of you think of this?
There is speculation that they will be moving to spin cast resin over metal.
I ordered a list of models from a hobbyshop including 1 metal model, so i got a call from the store owner who said he couldn't deliver that metal model cause he hadn't got anymore and he can't order new metal models from GW cause they're busy with a new way of making these models. And if I remember it right he said a new way of molding and the new models would come out around the summer.
If the store owner is right the new models would still be metal, however i hope he's wrong cause with resin models there could be a slight chance the models are gonna be a bit cheaper and resin models in my opinion are more easily to converse.
The thread title is pretty misleading, it made me think they were making MORE metal models.
If it's true though I would like it. It would be cheaper, although I like having special characters and HQ's be metal. Makes them feel more important.
There is resin and a hybrid plastic-type resin. I got some undead cavalry in the plastic resin and it is WAY better than the straight resin. Although it is just as difficult to glue (must use super glue) the plastic resin has an unreal amount of flexibility - almost like styrene plastic. The straight resin tends to snap and break if bent.
Hopefully, GW will go the hybrid route - it really is great stuff (and apparantly cheaper than metal...)
I have worked with resin models and many metal ones. Basically I've constructed 3 models from resin ...those being..
Revenant titan, scorpion tank, and phoenix bomber.
I can say now that resin is harder to work with (at least when it comes from forgeworld) because it is very very brittle and comes with alot of burrs, except they are hard brittle resin, too hard or too close of a snip, and there goes a peice of the model with it. Also they come warped as well, requiring you to put it in boilin water and slowly bend it to the right place, or...you guessed it...it snaps. glue actions is similar to metal, you got to hold it there or use green stuff or pin it. No instant bonds like plastic on plastic.
Now, if they are going to use resin, i really hope the quality of the miniature comes out better than forgeworlds products. Which , dont get me wrong i love FW models, is very sub-par to GW products ont he market. And Im not talking about the actual sculpt, just the what arrives in your dirty little paws.
BUT my final thought is...if GW can make resin models that are at least easier to work with and assemble/better quality than forgeworld, im all for the push away from metal. If they are fw style when i open the box, ill wish it was metal...
Eldar -APOC- 6500 Points
Chaos Daemons -Fate Crusher- 3500 Points
Grey knights - 1000 Points
Though i am thrilled at the fact thet they may be making the models easier to build and lighter in weight, i cant help but think that if they do change it, it just wont feel right. Im all for change but this... this is the work of Tzeentch...
I absolutely despise metal.. and I've painted at least six armies that were ALL metal before the game had a single plastic kit in their inventory. There's only one thing I hate more than metal; Forgeworld Resin. Metal is heavy, doesn't stay together well, needs to be pinned when possible, doesn't hold primer or paint very well... but at least clipping a burr off doesn't make the entire arm suddenly snap off in three pieces.
Hopefully they'll pick a more pliable resin and have some better QC on what they ship out.
