I was thinking about the Hrud, how they would look awesome as little ratty jawa type guys with long rifles and goggles, and I realized that sadly GW is never going to expand on this race.
Why? Because they have a stupid name.
That's right, you can tell the name was just a throw away that sounded alien when they were quickly making up "mysterious" species to feature in rulebook sidebars. Now they are backed into a corner, as people have become intrigued by the little ratty guys and even written unofficial fluff on them, but they can't make a codex for a race called "Hrud." That sound (Hr) doesn't even occur in the english laanguage and the word is unwieldy and just plain uncool sounding. It has none of the simple dynamism of the words "Tau", "Skaven", "Necron" or even "Eldar".
In the widely read article on the death of the squats the author even puts in a comment about the name being partly to blame for their demise (squats? What were we thinking.) Space dwarfs have now slowly reappeared but under the infinitely cooler name "Demiurg."
I think Hrud are an awesome idea. But they will never emerge until everyone has forgotten that the space rats were once called "the Hrud."
I mean honestly they might as well have a race called the ganoobs or the oboes.
I never gave much thought to the name of the Hrud, but always thought of them as cool anyways. The Hrud is a strange name, but a fitting name for a strange race. I think a more likely reason for them not being made (or at least, definitely not anytime soon) is that there are alot of races that need further developement already.
The Orcs, Necrons, Tau, and Dark Eldar (maybe even Harlequins) all need more added to them to catch up with the other races, be it either fluff, models, codex unit changes/additions, or any combination of those things. The Hrud are a great idea for special campaigns or fluff, especially with the inevitable appearance of Alien Hunters, but they would need to be a made up army with unofficial rules. They would be tossed to the side as far as official new races go because of more pressing matters.
But I wonder if the Hrud are a threatening enough race to even be considered as a new main race. The main armies all have a common theme that their codex brings out, and that is the whole idea of a lethal military capable of toppling an empire. All of the codexes convey of a feeling of "Look no further; this is the ultimate army."
Are the Hrud really so big of a threat to the Imperium that they would become a strong presence in the Universe? They are referred to as "an infestation", which makes them comparable to the Skaven(many people do compare them), but like Robotnik says, they are only referred to in small sidebars or passing references.

you're right i'm afraid. hrud are destined to be a sidebar race, after all, nids have the swarm tactic sown up. they might appear in say inquisitor but the only way for 40k is as allies to the tau (strangely they seem to be loosing the tau-ness, there are now whole kroot, nicassars and deimurg guys they deal with).
and you're right abouut the dexes, we had necrons (aargh thwey will conquer all w/ superior technology), chaos (arrgh the hordes will conquer us) and nids (aarrgh the swarms will conquer us) plus tau (aarg they may eventually conquer us), orks (potentially they will conquer us), how the hell do the imps live on, surely they should all be dead? its crazy.
i think they will be out on day, and then Squats!
Year....the Tau are gonna conquer the imperium...........right.
Ive always liked the name Hrud because its an odd word.....it sounds nice and alien....but their main problem is that their rats in space.......space rats.......rubbish! What kind of army would that be? Next thing you know there will be lizard people flying around space shooting lasers and riding dinosaurs.....no!
A Rhino? SLOTH!
heh the oboes...what a brilliant name for a race
ahem, anyway i agree about the fact that they are nowhere near threatening enough to have their own codex...if they ever becmoe so threatening, i think there is a problem...little fluffy space rodents aren't the most threatening creatures when compared to a 20 foot high carnifex...but i suppose they could make a unit like rat gres and stuff...arg i just hope they dont
a chapter approved list would be cool though
Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes...by that time they'll be a mile away, and have no shoes
Hrud. hmmmmmm. All iknow about them is that Jes goodwin did design them and i think they were almost intended to be made into a race. But that was probably back in rouge trader days when it was all small and skirmishy.
I can not see many people collecting them because as stated their threat level is not big enough. And also they can not take their WHFB counter parts role of being the swarm army ( skaven) because this is already taken by the tyranids. But then again DE are not really a big threat to the Imperium unless they united (which i hope they do cause this would give them an excuse to still be used). So maybe their is some hope yet for the Imperium.

I'd actually given this some thought when i was making my hrud based lost and damed list...
I saw them not so much as a horde army but a psychological warfare army, lots of snipers, booby traps a la catachans, and a few new toys that could cause pinning.. the biggest difference i see between the way in envision the hrud and the catachans is mysticism, it makes good sense for the hrud to be led by some sort of grey seer-like character, this time packing a bolt pistol. give him a randomly determined skillset of unreliable yet potentially devastating spells to draw from and you've added your fun magic element tieing them in to the skaven that GW says they're not based on. I could see their weapons being scavenged imperial archaeotech "improved" for random bursts of power and just as frequent spectacular failure.
the last few things I want to add is that in the WHFB core and Empire rulebooks the Skaven are refered to as a bogus claim and that no one actually believes they exist... so the imperium might not know just how big or small a threat the hrud really are, and using that statement as a basis for them not writing a codex doesn't work for me.. I just dont think they're going to write anything new untill they finish what they've already started in updating the eldar and ork codexes and maybe do a little article to update the tau, WH, DH, and necrons, when they're done with that they need to get to their codex alienhunters(the name sounds so silly to me) for their Ordo Xenos out... since they are alien hunters *shudders* i wouldn't be surprised to find "create your own alien templates" a la tyranid mutable creatures... if they did that, life would be so sweet... or at least gaming would be.
