Being a pure Death Guard player myself, I can't say I dislike many of the changes to the chaos codex. Feel no pain and free blight grenades for -1 inititive works well to the favor of the Death Guard and makes them focus to be more of the 'stand your ground' army it was ment to be rather than this version's obvious close combat undertones. And although I hear my marines will now cost 24 points apeice, with the decrease in rhino point cost it averages out to a 7 man plauge marine squad only costing an extra 2 points per man. Not to mention Typhus will now single-handedly take down everything from Carnifexes to C'tan. The thing I will miss the most is my Great Unclean One and his many, many wounds. It pains me to know my forgeworld Scabby will be sitting out of my matches for a long time.
And I must say I like how they seem to be trying to make the new models have more of a chaosy feel to them (especially the possessed) rather than just the "ooooh, we're chaos so we put horns on our helmets and spikes on our vehicals." Ironically, thats what GW now seemed to be promoting fluff wise with the shift from chaos marines being hardened veterans of ten-thousand years to 'evil pirates' similar to the dark eldar. 'Red Corsairs? Oh you put a red X across your previous chapter's icon on your shoulder? Oh, that really must get those loyalists angry.' Take that Imperium.
That makes little sence to me, the old marines had a CAUSE, they had FAITH in what they were doing and fighting for, they had PRIMARCHS and BACKGROUNDS leading back to the very formation of the Imperium of Man itself. Now they are just petty traitors, self-centered and self-aggrandizing, fighting only for greed and power-the type of man who should never had been allowed to become a space marine in the first place.
Mabey this is just because I don't properly understand the background of the Reds, so I apologize if I've made a glaring mistake. I also apologize if I've repeated the statement of someone else, I admit I didn't have time to read most of the replies on this thread, but I wanted to say what was really bothering me about the new book.

Although I agree that the new Codex seems to be focusing more on renegades than the original Traitor Legions, I think that you might just be basing your "evil pirates" theory on the Red Corsairs alone. If that's the case then yes, you have made an oversight.
Corsair = raider. Raider = pirate. Thus: Red Corsairs = Pirate.
Of course the Corsairs were going to have a pirate-y feel to them, they wouldn't want to go against their name.
But I do agree; Chaos should remain the uber-arch-enemy that they're meant to be, and not just a bunch of Dark Eldar wannabes. I find that insulting; how many people play Dark Eldar?
By the way, whats the word on Ancient Enemies in the new codex what with the cult troops and 'dedicated' banners? I think it's gonna get alot more complex.

It's not a choice, it's a Nurgling.

Remeber, YOu can still use a god specific greater daemon via the forge world rules. Just wanted to point that out.![]()
That is not dead which may eternal lie,
for in strange aeons even death may die.
Yes but as we all know, the Forge World Greater Daemons are pure filth (pun not intended). I don't think they've written the Traitor Legions out of the fluff entirely. I can't quote from the Chaos Codex off the top of my head but it seems to me that they provided plenty of examples in the fluff about the Traitor Legions as well as some of the renegades (who are not all pirates), instead of focusing exclusively on the 10,000-year-old veterans as they did in the previous edition. All Chaos Space Marines, whether they're pirates, renegades, or original Astartes from the Heresy, fight with dedication and zeal. Not all of them have a cause, but in the end they're all Space Marines and it's to be expected.
Personally I'm quite pleased on how the new Codex turned out. After all, we all know our share about the 4 main Traitor Legions, I think it was about time the Renegades got a turn in the limelight.Besides, it inspired me to start making a Bleak Brotherhood army, so that can't be bad. Except maybe for my wallet, but who needs food and a place to live? The street's as good a place as any to paint.
I have to agree with you on that - the renegades look really cool as well. I particularly like the Cleaved, they look like some weird combination between Slaanesh and Nurgle Marines, kinda remind me of the Violators from Ben Counter's Daemon World. Unfortunately, they're not too different from the Death Guard as an army, although maybe they are a little more flexible when it comes to that age-old debate of whether or not to spam Plague Marines.
