Default Iron Chef: Imperial Slum

Hey boys and girls of the scenery board. Today I've been a bit busy working away at this, and here is my toothpick iron chef entry.

So basically what I'm going for is a slum thrown together little village, the huts are going to be rusted sheet metal (cardboard) with wood floors, so thats pretty much it so let me get cooking.

*Press links for pictures*

So to start off I just cut off a piece of two layered cardboard from a random box.

Cardboard

Then I drew out rough shapes on the peice of card board and cut out about 2" x 6" peices of with a few 3" x 4" and 2"x2" for the roofs of my huts. Then I cut them out.

Pieces

Then I proceeded to rip of the first smooth layer of the cardboard as best I could and used a pen to get the little bits off.

Ripping off the first layer

I took a sanding block and worked at a 80 degree angle and smoothed out the ridges and it left me looking like this.

Finished shaping the cardboard

I think I might of made to many pieces but oh well. So I used 1/8 inch masonite as the base for this, I decided to go for the 6"x12" limit on this. I cut out the base with a jigsaw (caution if you attempt to recreate this use proper tool safety and protect yourself!)

Base

So then I put a rough drawing of the terrain piece on the board, I've decided how im going to construct this is to do the sheet metal and the base area seperatly for ease of painting, so my idea will only really show till later on.

Rough Sketch

My tooth picks

Alright so now I put the floor of tooth picks down (about 21 picks per floor) and then set up the two camp fires with foam blocks carved out a bit and broken twigs and tooth picks. Just pour some pva in and chuck it all on. The two garbage piles are just a blob of pva some left over rubble which you can learn to make with my "how to make rubbled terrain" guide I will be posting up tomorrow, and I put in a few broken tooth picks: chucked that all on and threw on a bit of sand to cover up the cracks.

Construction Begins

So there you have it, I'll be updating this until I'm finished.

Thank you.

Hello again, just a few updates I have. Ok so I've painted the cardboard sheets in this order.... first a mix of deep red and brown about 50-50 each paint that on, then a patchy layer of brown over the red, and then finally a heavy dry brush of metal silver over all of that.

Red
Brown
Metal

Alright then I put a layer of white glue on the base and sanded it.

Sanded Base

After that I glued together the little "huts" I'm going to put down on the board and just dry fitted them onto the base to give you a little idea of what the end product will be.

Dry fit to base

Until next time.....

Not bad padawan, not bad at all! :C

I like the flooring. Using them as flooring was a nice touch I didn't think of.

I think you may be the on to take the spot next to me on the IRON CHEF podium!

Alright... so I've got the painting all done and I think I can call it finished for now, the pieces are all removable so they can be easily removed during play (makes the game go alot smoother sometimes) and here she is ready for the judges....

Picture 2

Picture 3

So until all the other chefs are done and finished I shall wait for the polls to open.....

Congrad man, looks very very nice. For a beginner its a great piece. Everything works, the colors, the shapes, the concept. The toothpicks are easily seen and not throw into the piece hap-hazardly. Rep for you for getting this far and yes there will be blood when the polling begins.

I think what could REALLY help this is some wreckage about, just to show it has been lived in besides the shacks and fire.
helmets, armour, padding, guns, and maybe something to hold the shantys together better, or at least more obvious, melt a sprue into the gaps like the sheets are welded crudely together.

Maybe sticks and crud just lying around would really make this stick out.

If you look realllllyyy carefully you can see a sword and a few weapons laying around the fire place but yeah I do agree it could use a bit more detail work...... I might as well put some in since I have quite a bit of time.

So I've made this a while ago but never uploaded the picture but I thought there was one thing my piece was really missing... a pot of boiling water!

I basically took this plastic bit and painted silver and put black on the bottom of it and followed it up the sides.

Clicky

Enjoy.
