Rep Power: 23 ![]() ![]() | ![]() And here is how I did it. First lets start as the with the saucer, which is made from these. ![]() Take the rim off, right where the curve of the plate turn back out. ![]() Next, we will make a couple covers to finish the outer saucers. First, I am going to need some card stock. Good thing I'm an addict. ![]() Cut a couple nice circles ![]() Attach them to the plates, giving us the outer saucer pieces. ![]() Next we will need some spacers to seperate them. ![]() Glue them together. ![]() Spackle them up. Sand them down. ![]() A little glue, and 1 saucer. ![]() Now we are going to need a base.Using some more card stock, I made the outsides. ![]() Now just put these on some packing foam for a core. ![]() And cut ![]() Next make sure that there is a curve out of the foam for the saucer to sit in, like so. ![]() Now, go ahead and cover the foam that will be exposed with more card stock. ![]() Don't worry to much about the corners, we are going to cut them away along the major vertical sides. ![]() To give us room to cover them with these ![]() Like so ![]() Now lets make some doors. Lets use a paper towel tube and card board corrugation stuff. ![]() The lower door will be part of a small buttress. ![]() I used that same method as I used for the base but with thinner foam to make some buttresses ![]() ![]() I ate some of these. ![]() To get some of these, so that I could cut a small section to use to cover the gap that was created by the saucer notch where it meets the base. ![]() Lets put it all together. ![]() And send it off to paint. Add a couple bits for aerials. And the final product.(again) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are a couple things a may have done differently, but overall I really like the finished product.

Very nice. If I had to make a recommendation, I would have either cut out some card to make boxes outlined in red, or I would have cut out a template and then traced it really heavily with a ball point pen. That would have made them very straight and add some depth to the flat surfaces. Also, check out some of the colored spray paints. Rustoleum High Heat Almost would have been a good color match for that and you can apply wash/weathering in selected places on it.

Other then some of your lines being not so straight, im generally impressed. For a first piece well done, heck I think I even learned a few things here on making Tau scenery. Can't wait to see what else comes of it. Painting looks good to, though needs some weathering in my opinion, but i like everything nitty gritty dirty. The tau seem to be a more clean race(I play IG), though being outside makes everything dirty . . . eventually.

Actually it was pretty much all painted in spray paint. The not so straight lines are from my not so straight masking. I think I should have used a straight edge and hand painted it. As for the dirty, I tend to think of the Tau as a clean race and that they keep everything in good repair. My army is the same way. (not my fault that IG never clean anything)

Beauty! Another tau piece intothe iron Chef fry pan. I'm impressed with your use of generic paper products.

Love the shape of it, good use of paper plates. Instead of painting lines on the main support I would have used another layer of card with those detials cut out, easier to cut straigth lines than paint them. Nice job, at least you completed your entry!! Bugbait out. |

Pfft, if you'd used Mountain Dew products, it'd be a shoe in!

I saw that the OP referenced this post about a week ago and it has new value with planetstrike releasing, so please do not consider this as dragging up a deceased thread. Great work on the outpost. It's an excellent use of everyday items. I particularly like that you used straws to round off the hard edges. Did you use a foam cutter to make the clean lines in the packing foam or was another method used?
