Default Ork Mining Table

So I have been thinking quite a lot about what the plan will be for the rest of the table and I've landed on.

GOLD TOOF GULCH

Click the image to open in full size.

Gold Toof Gulch was once a human-built town that was attacked and taken over by Orkz, first to simply conquer more oomies, then the Orkz noticed what the oomies were doing out in the middle of nowhere in the first place...

GOLD!

Work began to extract the gold, strapping saws to the front of Kans, strong enough to pierce the hard underground, and work continued until a fatal collapse caused by a rogue Kan shut the mine down forever.

Some of the old structures lie in place after the Orks left, rusted Kanz and equipment scattered around the mine entrance left standing still in their last place, and will stay there forever.

These days the old Gulch doesn't see much action but occasionally humans and Orkz alike will migrate here in small groups to try and revive the mine, but are quickly culled by other forces, for the quick slaughter, or to try and find their own wealth in the tunnels below Gold Toof.

So that is the background for the table I've thought up, and now I'm going to go through some of the ideas I will be putting on the table.

- The buildings will maintain an almost classic-western style with a few 40k twists, like weapon mounts for defense and random Ork "repairs".

- A population sign and big sign for the town name, as well as warnings lying around near the mines.

- Pick axes and as much old and rusted mining equipment that I can think of, including Kanz with drills and saws specially made to mine.

- The mine will light up, minimally, with a string of lights across the roof and support struts up until the collapsed section.

- Rails and mining carrages leaving the mines scattered around to demonstrate the state of panic the miners left the mines.

- A 2nd and possibly 3rd shaft to the mines below with a verticle construction instead.

Default A quick update

Changed original post to match the new table idea

So now that you guys have a story (open to suggestions for changes, by the way) I can show you what I have done so far, not that there is a lot.

Click the image to open in full size.
This is just a small random hill for the sidelines, might build up a small defense on top for a cover save and even ladders for most of the hills for ease of movement.

Click the image to open in full size.
And the start of the mine shaft itself, it is so far roughly 1-1/2 times the size of a terminator high which I think shouldn't need much more height to seem legit as the Kanz with the saws would probably not have a wide range of movement to save them damage. (and collapses)

What does everyone think so far?

I will, for the record, be NOT be attaching the 2x4 sheets of foam to the MDF board, so it can be transported a little easier, and most of the stuff in the original sketch will not be attached so it can always be moved about to create new scenarios.

This sounds and looks really cool - Orks mining for gold? Genius!

I hope there is more to see soon...

Today I got a little soldering and cutting done, I will be adding more to the inside of the mine so don't put too much thought into how it looks so far, as there is about a billion things to come!

Here is how the whole mine/cliff looks at the moment.
Click the image to open in full size.
I made it a little taller as I felt its width and its height should be roughly the same, it just weirded me out the way it was.

Inside the mine, the single light was soldered together into the circuit but came undone just as I set it all back down in place so its now glowing.

I will be making pick axes and all that out of plasticard as I can make them a lot more "personalised" and "orky" with that fantastic stuff.

I got around to fixing the light before I left but it isn't light as much as I thought so I may have to set up another one.

The set-up is pretty simple, just a small groove cut in the foam to fit the wires which leads to a chunk of the hill missing with the battery and switch in it.

I may place a rock over the actual pull part of the switch and disguise it the best I can or just pop a skull on it, there is a few options and its just early days.

Click the image to open in full size.
The rock pillar is either 4 or 5 layers high so its roughly 125 CM from my notes on the foam I bought, but there will be much bigger ones to come.

Any ideas or comments welcome as always guys!

I cut down the walls to a length that I feel is much better, I will however have the sides covered in boulders so it gives it depth without actually being stronger.

Click the image to open in full size.
Inside the mine I've just placed down some quickly made rocks to show the collapse better, the train tracks took me quite some time but they are perfectly aligned so when I make a cart it will actually be able to wheel down it.

Click the image to open in full size.
The vertical mine shaft has begun, it took me forever to dig that hole out and then clean it up enough that I could slide the tray in.

Click the image to open in full size.
The tray and two small lengths of track that were destroyed during an attack, and the tray that will go down the vertical shaft which I may have two ideas about how the carts will get from the top of the shaft to the ground level again. One being a ramp and the other is a crane that will haul the carts from the top to the bottom with minimal fuss.

The ramp would be more complex to make and I just love cranes when it comes to Ork facilities so I'm leaning toward the crane.

So this is all the work I'll be doing today, unless I get inspired.

Today I got around to making a shack for the vertical mine shaft to house its elevator-type-thing, and also carved out some of the edges to make it look more rocky before I begin planning out the rest of this piece.

Click the image to open in full size.

A lot of time goes into making things out of paddle pop sticks, I forgot just how much I hate using the stuff but I can't use simple plasticard for a job like this as I want everything to look like its been made from wood, much easier if you actually use wood to construct it

Up on that hill will be a crane, to grab onto the carts as they leave the mine and drop them down on the tracks, there will also be a short length of track extending over the cliff so there is room for the crane to safely remove it.

A little "control" panel for the crane and I will have to make some sort of generator to work the mine shafts elevator.
