I mixed a little ink into some stain to do this balsa wood trebuchet. Obviously, use colors to suit the type of wood - old, rotting, good wood, etc.

Which armies do I have? Holy Cow - I've got three boys, so what armies do I NOT have??
Win/Loss Ratio? - I usually let my boys win, so frankly, it stinks...

India ink works really well. Add a few drops to rubbing alcohol and instant wash. If you take a wire brush to the balsa first you can make some ruffness to the wood for the ink to grab onto. As for weathering it, drybrush a light gray over top to simulate the sun bleaching the wood.
