21 - 30
31 - 40
I have struggled with this issue for some time now and figured a clean slate forum would not be a bad place to open it up for discussion...
Clanrats - how many do you put into a unit?
For years I took blocks of 36 in a 6x6 formation and that served me just fine. The only issues that ever cropped up had to do with exposed flanks or not enough deployment room on terrain heavy boards...
But recently I've whittled down my 2250 army in terms of core/special unit sizes from 36 to 30... this move (in conjunction with a few other point saving choices) has allowed room for more Jezzails, an additional WL cannon and a unit of stormvermin.
So I'm polling you - what is your primary size for your clanrats, and why?
The reason behind my vote (21 - 30) was that it gives me enough skaven to get to the enemy with even losing 10 models , I will still have 20 which gives me the rank bonus when I get into combat, because they will be shooting at a lot of units. the more units the merrier. If you have less to me it seems that the unit will not be functioning at full capacity due to shots.
I shall call him Squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my Squishy.
Personally I'm fielding units of 35.
7 x 5. This gives you an incredible frontage to maximize attacks as well as allowing for the loss of nearly two ranks or 14 Rats before LD is decreased.
I use 25 rats. ie 5x5. Enough to take casualties and still keep rankbonus.

I can only tell you what I'm accustomed to playing against, as I would never run those foul, verminous, ugly rat things instead (because I love me some foul, verminous, ugly zombies!).
I'm accustomed to seeing 25-30, which seems to work well with characters supporting them.
I use blocks of 25, as well. Keeps mass and ranks pretty high, doesn't get too expensive in points nor too unweildy by being so large. And truly, there's no point in going more than 5 wide in your frontage... all you're doing is making it require less to deny rank bonuses. Clanrats can't fight good enough to make it worth it - really, what will an extra 1-2 basic warrior attacks do to anything that's meant to fight?
Gonna have to agree with 25. Those two extra attacks will only hit and wound half the time each at best, so you really aren't getting enough CR out of all those extra clanrats you paid for. Keep it at 5 wide, its the most efficient way to go with units that rely on ranks, not kills.
I almost always use 27-28 rats, just to make sure i can afford to lose a couple to shooting before it gets bad.
27-30 Clanrats is what I have in mind although more is definitely better, and I have yet to see a 50+ Clanrat unit for myself.
Units of 30 are good enough. I've had one case where a unit of clanrats was totallt destroyed and that was vs Dwarves and he focussed all his ranged attacks on one unit. Still had 3 more though But you must also see it in the size of the game. 30 large for 2k games are Just right. For 1k games and lower 30 per units starts to wast points...
Also when adding a hero or character i like the unit to be rounded to 30, so 28-30 (except in maybe for a screaming bell unit 30 - 40...the way i roll those doubles....)
