I'm hoping you guys can help me make a decision. I've collected warhammer for a while now. Used to collect Dwarves and right now I'm collecting Vampire counts. I have recently been looking at Skaven. I would love to collect them....however I'm not sure when the new book is coming out and would not want to spend alot of money on old models and then find out the new models look cooler and be depressed about it.... haha. I hear that to play with Skaven you're looking at a lot of models on the table. Dwarves didn't suit my playing style, vampire counts are pretty cool though and i'll probably stick with them if all else fails. What tactics do you use for Skaven??
If someone would be so kind as to give me pointers on what i should get first (If i decide to get Skaven) that would be great as well..... basically if the new book and models came out tomorrow that would be a tipping point right there. Anyone know if they would be coming out with new core models??
Thanks for your time guys!!
Im getting very frustrated with Skaven, after these last few books is getting harder and harder to win or even play an even game. All the new books get something sweet, like abilities or cheaper units. I wouldnt start Skaven now, wait for the new book and hope it comes out within a year. Love Skaven, but they suck atm.
Played a dark elf army yesterday, I did try a few new things and I cant roll leadership checks to save my life, anyway, it was ugly, their new magic got me, he got a shit load of power dice and no limit to how many dice a DE wizard can use... fun fun.. I was prepared for a magic heavy army and had a lot of dispel scrolls, but he rolled 5 dice to cast Black Horror (11+ spell), which I dispelled 3 times, until he rolled 2 6s... 14 Stormvermin died and fled the battle a long with another unit, a third of my army gone with 1 ****ing spell that I couldnt do shit about. I know that could happen to any army, cant do anything against 2 6s. That new Hydra is a pain in the a... Terror and I cant roll leadership, even had my BSB in the group, 9 in leadership and failed twice...
The tactic I use and feel is the only decent one atm for Skaven are many warlocks / grey seers and lots of rats. Not to worried about archers, but warmachines (stormbanner can help here) and fear causing units suck.
Heard that 40 Jazzails should be a pain, but never tried that.
Everytime a new book is released it goes from 60/40 win ratio to about 30/70 against that army.
Skaven can still be used successfully, it just takes something different to adapt to the new lists.
When the Skaven get an update (rumors point to next year some time), I'm guess the clanrats/slaves will be redone and hopefully Stormvermin and Night/Gutter Runners.
A Skaven army needs plenty of basic clanrats and slaves to do well, and if you want to play you may as well pick them up now. If you want, do what other Skaven players will be doing: buy clanrats now and when the new ones come out use the oldies as slaves (no mercy among us ratkin ).
To start off a Skaven army, grab a Battalion or 2. They are an awesome deal and a good starter army. 60 rats, 2 Rat Ogres, and lots of Giant Rats is a solid start, and double that is even better. Toss in a character and you're all set. A lot of units can be converted from the Battalion, like Censer Bearers, Slaves, Stormvermin, Globadiers, and the like. A box of Night Runners is also very nice for some of our lovely skirmishers.
So, depending on how big an army and how much you want to spend, a Battalion, some characters, and a box of Night Runners is a good start. Depending on how you use them, you'll have anywhere from 500-1000 points (but the more numbers the better).
Did I mention Skaven need numbers? Basic clanrats are cheap and mainstay, so you have to have lots and having lots is easy. Slaves are the cheapest unit in the game, a block of 20 only costing 40 points! Use and abuse them to great benefit, and always take 1 unit of slaves per unit of clanrats. They can break unit through SCR alone and with so many regiments you can easily get flank and rear charges. Skaven shooting/magic is brutally effective, but it will tend to do a lot of damage to both armies, so prepare for the worst (and the worst is usually really bad). Our biggest problems are Ld, lack of cavalry, and heavy armor. Big units mitigate Ld problems (+1Ld per rank), use slaves and fodder to redirect and block cavalry, and mob, shoot, or magic heavy troops (or get PCBs in there).
Skaven are a fun army and viable against the likes of VCs, Daemons, etc. You just need to stick with your strengths (masses of cheap, expendable troops, crazy shooting and magic) and fight on your terms. Plus, there's nothing more fun than a good misfire, except maybe shooting into combat and/or watching your slaves die in nasty ways.

First of all don't use Storm Vermin... They pretty much suck. Also, Battalion boxes are 40 rats 20 monks, 1 giant rat pack and 2 RatOgers.
I'm getting ready for a 2500 tourney soon and just got my Screaming bell painted. Hopefully it'll help against those VC since last tourney there were 4 VC players out of 6 total people in the tourney.
Skaven are still a viable army. You just need to finesse them more than before. You can always find a used army book and grab some movement trays and dice and proxy them to see if you'd like to start them now or wait til later this year/early next year when the new book comes out.
I heard some1 say a couple of months ago that the release order for armies is
(Which Have Already Been Released)
So it shouldn't be to long to wait!
Some times its better to stay quite and let people think that you are stupid rather than opening your mouth and expelling all doubt...
I actually heard from a reliable source its looking like Lizardmen after Warriors of Chaos.
From what ive heard the new book for skaven is going to be released febuary next year or some where close to there.
What is free will but an illusion created by those foolish enough to belive they have any control over their lives.
Your looking at an overhaul of mortals next, with lizardman probably after that. Sometime later probably skaven if you base it on sales and when the books were released originally. Also Beastman are in there somewhere. Problem is skaven are not that popular of an army, so will be low on priorities. They are a difficult army to collect, and most hobbyiest just don't want to paint massed infantry. Also we have no monsters, and nothing really as a centerpiece of the army minus the bell, which you have to admit is pretty dull looking.
I have a colorful albino army with bright red robes, with orange highlights that I ran at GD baltimore this year. It got a lot of looks and compliments, but everyone said the same thing, they wished I could bring something monsterous to draw attention to the army. Best I did was 2x7 Jezzails, 2x Warplightning cannons, 3x clanrats with coverted rat ogre/ ratling guns, 3x slaves, 2x gutter runners, 3x engineers, 1x warlord. It looked nice on the table, earned 3rd, but all the dragons out shined in in color/ appeal.
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
get that old warp wheel thing to center piece your army !
I had bought one and im now desperately trying to find it seeing as its still usable in games just they arent making any more models.
To the member who expressed difficulty using Skaven;
I wouldn't consider myself a pro by any means, but the most common problem I see with Skaven players (around here at least) is that none of them take advantage of their army's strength as much as they should. NUMBERS! It's not enough to outnumber your opponent 2 to 1 or sometimes even 3 to 1. Just shut down the entire battlefield with tons of bodies and I promise the wins will come.
