Welcome to Librarium Online!
So, my army now needs a unit of Slaves. Thing is, I don't want to use the Clanrat models, because i'm kinda worried they'll look to similar to my actual Clanrats. Ideas, folks?
I use the Night Gobbos from Battle for Skull Pass. They're cheap, distinctive, and with a little work suitable disheveled and abused.
Check out ==My== blog: www.bnhblog.blogspot.com
GW did mix a few slaves into every box of clanrats (the bodys without armor with just the cloaks) i paint them random collors (rest of my army is green/brown) and mix them up with Goblins, Dwarfs, humans (all disheveled and bloodied)
Painting: 20 quarrelers
I use flaggellant models, they have that starving and crazed look. Then I use clan rat models with whips driving them forward for the last row and intermix some giant rats, looks pretty good in end.
Maybe this will help

40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
Personally I use the rats as normal. Seeing as all my clanrats have spears and sheilds, I gave my slaves swords and nothing else, painted the blades rusty, and the armour basic leather colours as my clanrats are all garbed in army colours. Looked different enough when all ranked up, yet still felt like a part of the army. It depends on how unified you want your army to look, but clanrats would be the cheap option as you get more models to the box than most other army's basic infantry. Alternatively, a friend of mine just clips the heads off the spears and forces his slaves to run in with big sticks. XD

Painting: 20 quarrelers
Give your friend a cookie, because i'm also stealing that idea! I might sharpen the sticks though.. Hmm.
Edit - This doesn't work very well. Shame

Hehe. Glad it was so useful! just use a scalpel if it's not going well, and sharpen the sticks like a pencil. get your man on! *vigorous fist pumping*
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.
It's more that they end up with too much of the stick below their hand and not enough above. Looks like they're holding a stake rather than a sharpened pole. I could go chopping them up further to balance it out somehow but, well... They ARE only slaves, they wont be on the table for THAT long.
